cians is that g ender identity disorder or transsexualism is an identifiable and incapacitating disease which can be diagnosed and suc-
cessfully treated by reassig nment surgery in carefully selected patients. T o ex amine the histor ical perspective, genesis and manag e-
ment of gender identity disorder , or transsexualism, and draws attentio n to the medico- legal considerations.
