Penguins almost exclusively live in the Southern Hemisphere except for one specie (Galapagos
penguin) which is found in the north of the Equator.
They spend about half of their lives on land and the other half in the sea.
The largest living species, Emperor Penguin, are about 1.1 m tall while the smallest penguin species,
little blue penguin or fairy penguin are about 30 – 33 cm tall.
Penguins have countershaded, dark and white plumage and flippers for swimming.
Most penguins feed on krill, fish and squid and other forms of sea life which they catch with their
bills and swallow whole.
Interesting Fact #1 – penguins have solid bones instead of hollow ones to reduce buoyancy and fly
underwater.
Interesting fact #2 - Penguins have more feathers than any other bird, up to 80 per square inch, to
keep them warm.
