Applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare are largely innovations that make

necessary processes quicker and more efficient. These include technologies such as AI-powered
diagnostics, predictive analytics, drug discovery, and even AI-assisted surgery. AI-Powered
diagnostics can very rapidly assess medical scans and tests such as x-ray images and blood tests
to look for abnormalities that a human viewer may miss. Using this data, predictive analysis can
be done where patterns are assessed and extrapolated onto patients to see if they may be prone to
certain future health risks. Drug discovery is a growing field in the healthcare sector or artificial
intelligence currently. By creating and virtually testing molecular structures with predictive
technologies, AI is able to assist in more quickly creating new treatments for diseases such as
cancer, Alzheimer’s, and rare genetic disorders. AI-Assisted surgery is still under development,
but robots are being trained to assist surgeons with procedures. These technologies could
improve precision, minimize invasiveness, and reduce recovery times. In the Pew Research
Center article on how Americans perceive AI providers of health care, it is noted that 59% of
people are not comfortable with a robot performing their surgery, however (Pew Research
Center, 2023). As with many domains of artificial intelligence, there seems to be an aversion to
allowing these technologies to come into our lives.
There are obvious benefits to certain aspects of AI in healthcare. One of the greatest
benefits is the efficiency and speed that healthcare could occur at. In the near future, a patient
could go to the doctor’s office and in one visit be screened for all possible conditions, receive a
diagnosis, and be prescribed a drug personalized for their own biology and condition that cures
them quicker than any drug currently available. The U.S. Government Accountability Office
states that “Several machine learning (ML) technologies are available in the U.S. to assist with
the diagnostic process. The resulting benefits include earlier detection of diseases; more
consistent analysis of medical data; and increased access to care.” (GAO, 2022).
Some ethical challenges in the area of artificial intelligence in healthcare are the security
risks and potential bias. Artificial intelligence requires vast amounts of sensitive patient data,
which would require many guardrails are put in place for how that data is stored. Many people
are worried about how minorities will be represented in these systems and how the data could be
skewed against them.
Artificial intelligence systems in healthcare are only improving, and there is no doubt that
these technologies will drastically change the way that all people seek and receive healthcare.
