Dancesport: A Comprehensive Overview

Introduction
Dancesport is a dynamic combination of art and sport, previously known as competitive
ballroom dancing. It involves a pair—typically a man and a woman—competing on the dance
floor alongside other couples. This discipline not only enhances the physical and mental
conditioning of dancers but also showcases grace, creativity, and technical precision. Governed
by the World Dance Council (WDC) and the World Dancesport Federation (WDSF), dancesport
is recognized by the International Olympic Committee and is included in the Olympic program.

Characteristics of Dancesport
The following are the key characteristics that define dancesport as a unique and sophisticated
dance style:

 Posture: Exhibits confidence and sophistication.

 Line: Involves stretching the body for elegance.
 Poise: The woman’s upward and outward stretch to complement the man’s frame.
 Timing: Staying in sync with the music
 Hold: Maintaining a proper closed position with a partner.
 Togetherness: Moving harmoniously as one unit.
 Musicality and Expression: Interpreting and expressing the music through movement.
 Power: Demonstrating controlled energy.
 Shape: Using turns and sways to create visual appeal.
 Floor Craft: Maneuvering to avoid collisions on a crowded dance floor.
 Foot and Leg Action: Proper technique for balance and strength.
 Lead and Follow: Nonverbal communication between partners.
 Intangibles: The overall visual impact of a couple’s performance.
