Totalitarianism Chart – Between the Wars

Definition: Totalitarianism is when dictators control all aspects of the government & lives of the
citizens.

Kinds of governments that became totalitarian after WWI:

● Fascism = Italy

● Nazism = The people were a government party who ended up controlling

the government in Germany.

● Communism = This type of government became famous in Russia During WW2.

● Military Dictatorship = This type of government became famous in Japan During WW2.

Why totalitarian governments were able to take control of Europe after WWI:
1. Promising simple solutions to their nation’s problems.

2. Rebuilding national pride (often using propaganda).

3. Providing scapegoats (targets for anger & blame).

4. Absorbing power, taking away individual rights, and crushing opposition (1 party; 1 ruler)

Totalitarian leaders appear to provide a sense of security and to give a direction for the
future.
