The First Moon Landing

On July 20, 1969, millions of people gathered around their televisions to watch two U.S.
astronauts do something no one had ever done before. Wearing bulky space suits and
backpacks of oxygen to breathe, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first
human beings to walk on the moon.

The first moon landing was not a hoax. Apollo 11 did happen. Humans really did set foot on the
Moon.

We have countless images, videos, lunar samples and scientific data to prove it. But more than
that, human exploration has literally left its mark on the Moon's surface. We've left flags,
photographs, seismometers, mirrors, and even vehicles behind. We've brought back rocks, dirt,
and literal pieces of the Moon upon our return to Earth.

However, these monumental moments in history, of landing on the Moon in the late 1960s and
early 1970s, are not a part of the memories of the vast majority of people living today.

Unsurprisingly, some of them are skeptical that it ever happened. Among there counterclaims
are based on many of the photos taken by the NASA in which shadow placements are
questionable. Surely, if the Sun were the only light source, then the shadows should be parallel.
This prove that the whole scene was mocked up in a studio, with multiple light sources creating
different shadow patterns.

Also, conspiracy theorists argue that the lack of stars in the Apollo 11 mission photographs
prove that the event was staged. NASA could not have faked the full wonder of the lunar sky,
and so they simply chose not to include any stars at all. Another questionable photograph is
that of Buzz Aldrin saluting the proudly waving American flag on the Moon when there is no
atmosphere on the Moon hence, there should be no wind waving the flag.

Thankfully, in science, we don't need to be there ourselves to have proof. Here are four different
pieces of evidence we can point to that demonstrate the Moon landings actually occurred:

Lunar footprints are visible in the moon surface. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which
has orbited and mapped the Moon at the highest resolution ever, returning hundreds of
Terabytes of data, has something to say about that. The Apollo 12 image shows not only the
physical landing site (marked "Intrepid Descent Stage" on the image), but also the Surveyor 3
probe that had been on the Moon since 1967, visited by the Apollo 12 astronauts two-and-a-
half years late.

Also, over 8,000 photos are documenting our trips. NASA has released all the photos of the
twelve Apollo missions that made it to space on a publicly available Flickr photostream, sorted
into a series of incredible albums by mission.
Scientific equipment were also installed on the Moon. We have brought up a large amount of
scientific equipment and installed it on the lunar surface during the Apollo missions that has
been used even up until today. And lastly, we brought back samples in a form of rocks, , and
learned a ton about lunar geology from them.
