After the official decision of the Ministry of Education and Training

about letting English becoming an optional subject, whether “English

should be compulsory in the upper secondary school or not” is a never-
ending debate and people are divided both in favour and against this
argument. Everyone has a significant contribution and influence on this
but from my personal point of view, English has a crucial role to play in
our society and it is necessary to take it as a mandatory subject.

First of all, the most common medium of education and white-collar jobs
is English as it is comprehensible to most people around the world. For
example, when a person becomes proficient in English while in school,
he/she has access to various life-changing possibilities. Last but not least,
being fluent in English opens up a world of prospects where one can
delve into various technological, scientific and magnificent other
breakthroughs going on in this world. It not only broadens the knowledge
of the person but also increases their tenacity to make their own mark in
the world.

What’s more, English has been widely used for communication purpose
ever since the days of imperialism. For instance, a tourist usually uses
English for a plethora of purposes such as asking for directions, buying
food and so on. In addition, English is the preferred language for conflict
resolution around the world. Moreover, scientific education is mainly
imparted in English. For example, almost all journal articles and
conference papers are in English. Therefore, these merits vindicate the
importance of the English language.

The above are the fundamental benefits of English for not only high
school students but also everyone; however, focusing on our reality,
because of the large amount of Vietnamese education programme,
students no longer have interest in English and it witnessed hundred of
conflicts about this issue.

Having considered a range of arguments, I have drawn the conclusion

that the merits provided by English is dramatically essential and we need
to have a discussion and make the most appreciate decision.
