Parts of Speech

The parts of speech explain how words are used in a sentence. Understanding them helps improve

both written and spoken English.

1. Noun
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples: John, City, Book, Happiness

2. Pronoun
A pronoun is used in place of a noun.

Examples: he, she, it, they, we

3. Verb
A verb expresses an action or state of being.

Examples: run, speak, is, are

4. Adjective
An adjective describes or modifies a noun.

Examples: beautiful, tall, happy

5. Adverb
An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Examples: quickly, very, silently

6. Preposition
A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and other words.

Examples: in, on, at, over

7. Conjunction
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses.

Examples: and, but, or, because

8. Interjection
An interjection expresses strong emotion.

Examples: Wow!, Ouch!, Hurray!
