03: Scalars & Vectors

Scalars: magnitude
Vectors: magnitude & direction

Vector diagrams
● Arrows: head to tail
● Vector addition: Vector A + Vector B = resultant R
○ Resultant R: double arrow
○ Max resultant: forces acting in same direction
○ Min resultant: forces acting in opposite directions
● Vector subtraction: Vector A + ( – Vector B) = R
○ Just flip vector B in the other direction (mirror flip)
● Vector triangle method
1. Identify vectors (table)
2. Sketch
3. Scale
4. Draw to scale (remember to label resultant)
5. ATQ
● Parallelogram method
○ Use for 2 vectors acting at a point
● Forces in equilibrium
○ 3 forces form a closed triangle
○ R = 0, stationary
● Polygon of forces
○ > 3 coplanar forces acting at a point in equilibrium: closed polygon

Vector Resolution
● Resolved into X and Y axis (2 perpendicular directions; independent of each other)
● Then just use trigonometry
