Meaning of National Security
National Security can be defined as the structures and processes put in place by a government to
protect the country and its citizens from either external or internal attacks.
The efforts put in place by the security agencies to prevent or stop internal or external attacks
constitutes a national security.
Security means safety; to keep from danger or harm , to hide from destruction, to protect from
thieves etc.
Security agencies in Nigeria
Agencies of National Security
Because if the various activities of criminals and evil people in the country, the Federal Government
has established some agencies to take charge of the security and check perpetrators of evil acts.
These agencies are:
1. Nigeria Immigration Service: Nigeria Immigration Service issues the standard Nigerian
Passports. It controls the movement of people across the national borders. It also checks
illegal migration in and out of the country.
2. Nigeria Police: The Nigeria police are charged with the responsibilities of
arresting,prosecutes offenders and criminals.
3. Nigerian Customs: The custom check cross-border smuggling, supervise imports and
exports and generate revenue for the government by collecting customs and excise duties.
4. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC): The NSCDC assists the police in
community policing, they arrest offenders and assist in prosecuting them.
5. Nigerian Armed Forces: This comprises of Army, soldiers, Nigerian Navy, they work together
to ensure peace and harmony in the country.
6. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA): The NDLEA is responsible for
searching and arrest carriers and users of dangerous drugs.
Consequences of Poor security

National security could mean any defense arrangement or plan by a nation which is good enough to
successfully resist hostile or destructive action within or outside a country.

The following are some of the effects of crimes on national security
1. More funds is spent on security rather than development
2. Heavy spending on ammunition makes the economy to suffer
3. Fear of insecurity increases
4. Foreign investors become apprehensive and may leave the country

PIPELINE VANDALISATION
This is an unpatriotic act of willfully destroying pipes that carry petroleum products.it brings
unnecessary hardship on the nation as these products become scarce and expensive, it also leads
to water pollution and destruction of farmlands used for agriculture purposes.
Causes of pipeline vandalisation
1. Grievance with government
2. Get rich quick syndrome’
3. Lack of patriotism for the nation

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Criminal behaviours are unacceptable behavior in any community. For example, stealing, fighting,
etc.
Stay away from all criminal behaviors as soon as you can. One of the ways to avoid criminal
behaviors is CONTENTMENT.
MEANING OF CONTENTMENT
Contentment is the state of being happy and satisfied with what you have.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CONTENTMENT AS MEANS OF AVOIDING CRIMINAL BEHAVIOURS

In ordinary language, a crime is an unlawful act punishable by a state or other authority. The term
crime does not, in modern criminal law, have any simple and universally accepted definition, though
statutory definitions have been provided for certain purposes.

Advantages :For example

1. Delinquent youths frequently engage in crime for social benefits, such as feeling
accepted and respected by their delinquent peers.
2. They are also rewarded by personal gains that may include stolen goods, money, and
sensation seeking.

Disadvantages : After you experience a crime you may find that:

1. You feel angry, upset or experience other strong emotions.


2. Things suddenly fall apart for you.
3. You show physical symptoms.
4. You blame yourself thinking you should have done things differently.
5. You develop long-term problems such as depression or anxiety-related illness.

Drug Trafficking

Drug Trafficking is the transferring, carrying of drugs especially hard drugs like heroin, cocaine and
marijuana from where they are produced to where they will be consumed.

Drug trafficking is illegal trading on harmful drugs. It involves the cultivation, manufacture,
distribution, storage, selling and consumption of substances which are prohibited by law. Drug
trafficked is dangerous; drugs like cocaine, heroin, cannabis, marijuana etc.

The drug traffickers use illegal entry points into the country. Youths who take hard drugs are
sometimes rendered useless and sometimes end up becoming mad.

Consequences of Drug Trafficking


Drug trafficking has the following consequences:
1. Bad image for the nation.
2. Imprisonment.
3. Death penalty.
Bad Image for the Country
Countries whose citizens are involved in drug trafficking are rated poorly by the international
community and are treated with contempt or suspicion in any bi-lateral relation.
Imprisonment
People caught in this act are meant to face the wrath of the law which eventually ends up in
imprisonment. Some of them on discharge, behave like abnormal human beings.
Death Penalty
Some cases of drug trafficking lead to death. In 1984, during the military regime of General
Muhammadu Buhari, the death penalty was imposed on drug traffickers upon conviction.
Ways of Preventing Drug Trafficking
Drug trafficking can be prevented through the following measures:

2. Alleviation of poverty
3. Legislation/Punishment
4. International Cooperation
5. Employment
6. Social security
7. Anti-Drug Agencies
Education
The citizens should be sensitized, particularly the youth, on why there is legislation that forbids drug
trafficking and the bitter consequences of such action.

It is an illegal transfer of hard drugs from one place to another. Drug trafficking is the term used to
describe the production, distribution and sale of illegal drugs. In the United States, such drugs
include cocaine, heroin, PCP, LSD, methamphetamines and marijuana

Penalties for trafficking may vary, but in most places penalties are intended to be severe enough to
discourage individuals from engaging in selling drugs.

Drug trafficking is a major source of crime worldwide. Not only is there physical danger inherent in
the use of illegal drugs, but drug smuggling is also frequently accompanied by other crimes such as
murder, kidnapping, prostitution and assault. Authorities work full time all over the world to prevent
the use and sale of illegal drugs, as both represent enormous dangers to society.

While laws vary according to jurisdiction, individuals charged with drug possession usually face stiff
penalties, which include property forfeiture. Hefty fines and time in prison. In some countries, such as
China, drug sales may be punishable by death. In certain jurisdictions, when people are caught
smuggling or selling drugs, individuals will sometimes hire a drug lawyer who specializes in
defending individuals accused of such crimes. Even with legal counsel, however, drug trafficking
laws designed to deter people from producing and selling drugs are strictly applied.

Reasons for Drug Trafficking

Some of the reasons why people engage in drug trafficking are:

Consequences of Drug Trafficking

The effect/consequences of drug trafficking cannot be overemphasized, they are

2. In some countries, it leads to immediate and shameful death of the traffickers
3. Drug trafficking will also lead to high rate of corruption in the society
4. They are arrested and regarded as criminals
5. It destroys the youth of a nation
6. A country that is known as drug trafficking country are usually avoided by other countries

Measures for preventing drug trafficking; the following ways and measures can be used to prevent
drug trafficking, these are

1. Employment should be made available to the youth


2. Appropriate punishment should be given to arrested drug traffickers to teach others lesson
3. Appropriate information should be made available to everyone about drug trafficking.
4. The police, immigration department and the national drug law enforcement agency must be
well equipped to tackle and fight against drug trafficking
5. Everyone should learn to respect the law of the country
6. Poverty eradication measures must be properly implemented
7. Both developed and developing countries must co-operate with one another war against drug
trafficking
8. The government and nongovernmental organizations should made massive advert against
drug trafficking.
