Benefits and Reasons Why College Athletes Should Get Paid
Benefits and Reasons Why College Athletes Should Get Paid
1st slide
I. Are you, someone you idolize, or someone you know a college athlete?
II. Today I am going to inform you about collegiate athletes and why they should get
compensation for their likeliness.
III. I have always been very intrigued by college sports especially basketball, but not long ago I
had a thought, and didn’t realize how much money these big time college players bring in to their
respective universities. It wasn’t until a few years ago where an FBI investigation had opened up
out of nowhere about players accepting money illegally, that’s when I realized players were
being controlled and taken advantage of their likeliness.
IV. Today I will be getting into how I believe how big of a problem it is that the NCAA is
robbing and taking advantage of college athletes, the money, they deserve, and make sure
everyone is getting a fair share all around.
2nd slide
V. The department of education reported that their college programs at these universities are
pulling in an average of 14 billion dollars in total revenue, and that was in 2019, so its even more
now.
I. Student athletes basically make or break the universities chance of making money especially if
they are a star player. They are very valuable and worth a lot more than what people realize.
a. when it comes collegiate athletes on average their scholarship ranges from about
twenty thousand to twenty-five thousand, that means over their next four years it would be worth
a little over one hundred thousand. As I was researching, I found a study by the students from
Drexler university. They estimated the fair market value of FBS football and basketball players
to be one hundred twenty thousand forty-eight dollars and two hundred sixty five thousand
twenty seven dollars.
b. Why should other benefit off someone’s performance and hard work.
c. The NCAA takes advantage of players and make millions off of them. At one point the
NCAA used players in video games to gain money. According to Rodger Groves from Forbes
Magazine, “EA Sports reported 3.8 billion in net revenue and has generated more than 1.3 billion
in sales just within the United States.”
d. This is similar to doing a group project at school and you do all the work but another
kid says he did all the work, another example would be is someone made a movie and just didn’t
pay the actors.
3rd slide
e. A few years back five players from Ohio state suspended from school because they
sold their own jerseys with their names on the back of it. But then you turn around and see that
Auburn University sold Cam Newtons game worn pants for one thousand five hundred dollars. I
know, crazy right?
a. compensation should not be made off of an athlete if they are not allowed to receive
any of it (apparel, video games and more)
b. Allowing the NCAA to make money off of the players hard work is taking away everything
the player has worked for.
c. The coaching staff salary should be reduced so players have a bi weekly or monthly
compensation.
III. We will use a combination of allowing the money that is made off players to actually go to players,
we will also cut coaches’ salaries by 10%.
