Teen designs app to replace textbooks

A teenager has developed an application for digital textbooks with the aim of reducing
dependency on physical books.

Ahmad Zulfadzli Khamidi, 13, developed the app in just two weeks with
training and guidance from the Malaysian Global Innovation and Creative Centre
(MaGIC) at Borneo744 in Bintawa here.

He said the idea for the app came from his own experience of getting bored and
drowsy quickly when studying textbooks. “However, I faced some constraints
in realising my dream. I had an idea but did not have the know-how in designing and
writing the software codes for the app,” the second of four siblings told Bernama
(Malaysian World News Agency).

Ahmad Zulfadzli and his mother Norhasyimah Ahmad Merrican, 38, then went to
Borneo744 (a Blue Ocean Entrepreneurs Township) for advice and were surprised
that programmes to learn the basics and principles of coding were offered for
free there.

He said with this app, teachers no longer need to mark every exercise and exam
paper, students do not have to bring books to schools and there would be no question
of missing textbooks or insufficient stationery.

“The app is easy to use and suitable for students of all ages, whether in the primary,
secondary or university level. “For a start, it has English, Bahasa Malaysia,
Mathematics and Science, but more can be added on later,” he said. Ahmad Zulfadzliʼs
creation saw him winning the junior category of Hack Weekend KCH, a hackathon
held in conjunction with Tegas Youth Forum 2017 at the Borneo Convention Centre on
Oct 14.

He said he was now in the proce ss of comple ting his se cond app for small
entrepreneurs in Sarawak to market their products.

Read the text and decide whether the statements that follow it are true (T) or false (F).

Mental health crisis in teens is being magnified by demise of

creative subjects in school
I coordinate the Things As They Are network for young artists with
experience of mental ill health. I have found that young people with mental
health conditions often have a keen perception of how the media, economy
and society contribute to their problems. These large-scale issues are often
beyond the scope of schools to address, but with a change of focus, the
educational environment could move beyond firefighting problems to play a
more fundamental role.

A vital first step would be measures to reverse the shrinkage of space and
time that is allowed for dialogue, self-expression, exploration and just plain
chatting, between young people and caring adults. These opportunities
enable young people to understand the world around them and thrive despite
adversity.

I would like to mention my own frustrating attempt to establish a lunchtime

storytelling club with a group of keen, and vulnerable, young people in a local
secondary school. We wanted to establish a space where different “tribes” of
young people could make friends and collaborate creatively outside the
constraints of the curriculum, which allowed little space for creative writing
or group work. The teachers were supportive – yet with lunch breaks cut to 35
minutes to maximise lesson time and manage behaviour, and further
shortened by frequent detentions, it proved impossible to build up a stable
group, and teachers lacked the time to support the ideas for performances
and projects from pupils.

It is widely agreed that education systems centred on exams place stress on

young people; they also squeeze out of the school day anything that does not
contribute to this. Arts and sports activities dwindle away from the
curriculum, and teachers find themselves less often in the informal,
supportive roles of mentor, facilitator, and guide.

To try and tackle the challenge young people are facing, the government
could start by mandating time and space in schools for exploratory, informal,
and pupil directed activity. This could be done by reinstating leisurely lunch
breaks and allowing for extracurricular activities within them. Arts and
sports lessons also must be restored where they have been reduced within the
curriculum.

Re ad the te xts about some of the worldʼs gre ate st music festivals and match
the m with the questions that follow.

World’s Greatest Music Festivals

15. Burning Man Festival, Nevada
Every year, thousands of people come to Nevada to
create a city dedicated to art and self-expression.
By the time Burning Man is over, there’s no trace of
it left. The festival started in 1986 when two friends
burned an improvised wooden ‘man’ on the Summer
Solstice while a curious crowd watched. In the
following years, more people came out to watch the
two men burn bigger and bigger wooden effigies.
Eventually, the festival evolved into a music and
arts community.

16. Coachella, California

Coachella is held in the California desert at the
Empire Polo Club. The festival was inspired by a
Pearl Jam concert held at the club in 1993, which
was part of a Ticketmaster venue boycott. The first
Coachella was held in October 1999, only three
months after Woodstock 99, a historical disaster of
a festival. Over two days Coachella showcases not
only popular and established rock and indie acts,
but also hip-hop and EDM music. In addition to the musical acts, art installations
are featured. Many of the installations are interactive, which provides a unique
experience for concertgoers.

17. Reading and Leeds Festivals, United Kingdom

This festival is actually two festivals held
simultaneously in Reading and Leeds, England.
The Reading festival is the original and is the
world’s oldest music festival still held today. These
days, the festival is dominated by punk, alternative,
metal and hardcore bands. Reading and Leeds have
hosted some of rock’s most memorable performances,
including Nirvana‘s last UK performance. Kurt
Cobain was brought onto the stage in a wheelchair
and medical gown, parodying critical speculation of
his mental health. The festival’s stunning amount of music and friendly atmosphere
make it a perfect first-time festival.

18. Fuji Rock, Japan

This festival got its cool name because the first
one, held in 1997, was at the base of Mount Fuji. It
is now held in July at Naeba Ski Resort in Japan.
At this festival, concert-goers get an unrivaled,
picturesque experience. The walks between stages,
which tend to be somewhat long, are complemented
by trails that cut through lush forests and beautiful
streams. The largest gondola ski lift in the world,
dubbed ‘Dragondola,’ carries attendees up the mountain to overlook the festival site.

19. Tomorrowland, Belgium
Hosted in Belgium, Tomorrowland is one of the
world’s biggest and most celebrated EDM music
festivals. Although it is one of the newest music
festivals on the circuit, having started in 2005, it
now has a reputation across the world. In fact, the
festival has been so successful that spin–offs have
been created in Georgia and Brazil

20. Sunburn Festival, India

First held in 2007, Sunburn Festival takes place in
Goa, India, and has become a significant contributor
to the EDM* festival scene in that area of the world.
It is currently Asia‘s largest music festival, and it
is known for its amazing light and sound quality,
as well as a powerful fusion of visual and auditory
performances.
*EDM= Electronic Dance Music

21. Hideout Festival, Croatia

For EDM fans interested in 24/7 partying on the
beautiful beaches of Croatia, this festival, held in
the city of Zrće on a Croatian island, is a dream.
The festival features unique parties in pools and
on boats. It rose to prominence in 2011, when it
was placed on The Guardian‘s Best Festivals list.
As its website boasts, the festival possesses a ‘true
hedonistic spirit.’

22. Sziget Festival, Hungary

Held every August in Budapest, Hungary, Sziget
festival has established itself as one of the most
prominent in Europe. What started as a student
event in 1993 has grown to be an internationally-
revered festival that rivals Burning Man. It has
been described as ‘an electronically amplified,
warped amusement park that has nothing to do
with reality.’ It even has a ‘party train’ service that
picks up concert-goers from all over Europe.

I’ve always known I wanted to be an entrepreneur —23— I was really young. I
always knew I never wanted to work for somebody else, and wanted to start my

was just gonna work out. They end up —26— their dream!

My No. 1 thing that I have right now is my company. I have just—27— it and
it’s called Kids for Success. Basically, I become a kid’s mentor for an entire year.
We had a kid who —28— arrested, had been —29— of school three times in a
month, was the worst in his class for grades, and was always depressed. Then he—

around, starting his own business with a positive outlook on life and is now
