ME 104: Engineering Principles and Communication

Communication Skills Project

1. Formation of Groups

The communication skills project is a group project that students need to form their own groups. A group should
consist of five members. As you aware, the whole class has been divided into ten groups. Please see the uploaded
Excel book for confirmation of the group and come for the respective session. Further details about this will be given
at the class.

Each and every student needs to bring a project log book and an evaluation book to the each workshop. The soft
copies of the project logbook and evaluation book are uploaded separately. Once you prepare these books, bring those
to Engineering Office and have a faculty seal on it.

2. Project Topics

Students are expected to carry out a community based project as part of the communication skill development
component of Engineering principles and communication module. The methodology of the project should be interview
based or questionnaire based and should be different to previous projects that SLIIT students have already studied.
Online or internet-based questionnaires are discouraged. The students may choose one topic of the following topics or
they may propose a topic and get the approval form the lecturer within the first session.

 Are people happy with food-supply based policies in Sri Lanka?

 Are people concerned that their use of social media is being exploited for profit by large companies?
 Do older people prefer for physical activities?
 Do people happy with polices and priorities of kidney transplant patients?
 What can SLIIT students do to help reduce poverty?
 Do people happy with small businesses in your area?
 Are people happy with the Mobile Banking Services?
 Do people happy with Television Channels?
 Do people happy with Mosquito controlling attempts?
 Does Peer Pressure Influence SLIIT Students?

3. Progress of the Project

The students need to report the progress of the project throughout the semester. The progress should be reported as a
power-point presentation and a logbook record. The lectures and a peer group will be evaluated your project.

Logbook Records

Individual student needs to maintain a logbook and make notes in each meetings.

Power Point Presentations

Maximum of two students should do the power point presentation within one section. Each research group will receive
four sessions to update the progress. Within these sections, all students should do the presentation at least one time and
will receive individual marks for presentation skills and group marks for the progress. Then, final presentations will be
arranged at the end of the semester and all students must be completed two presentations during the semester. The
semester schedule for communication skill workshops is given in Table 1. Accordingly, you need to attend each week
but you will have presentations every other week. In other weeks you need to provide feedback to your peer group and
you will receive marks for that.
Guidance Sessions: Students need to introduce the group members and reason to select the topic. Also, they need to
prepare a personalize Timeline according to the presentation expectations which are explained below and submit. The
students need to identify a peer group, who will be providing the feedback to your project.

Presentation 1: Explain terminologies, objectives, limitations, past research (literature review), methodology, and the
questionnaires or structured interview questions. (5 minutes presentation followed by 5 minutes questions)

Presentation 2: Explain how did you conduct the questionnaire survey or interviews, analysis, the results (Eg: graphs,
tables, etc), whether results can be justified, if not why. (5 minutes presentation followed by 5 minutes questions)

Presentation 3: Explain further analysis and results, conclusions, whether results can be justified, if not why. (5
minutes presentation followed by 5 minutes questions)

Presentation 4: Explain overall results, conclusions, recommendations, contribution to the society from this project (5
minutes presentation followed by 5 minutes questions)

Final Presentation: Explain overall project from introduction, objectives, limitations, literature review, methodology,
analysis results, conclusions, recommendations. (10 min presentation)

Draft Report
The main body of the research report is expected to be not more than 8 pages. The introduction should be limited to
one page. Also, literature review should be limited to one page. Other components may consist with methodology,
result, conductions and recommendations. Further details about this will be discussed at the class. The reporting
