Pero, lejos de redundar en favor de Pedro Petrovitch, provocó
violentos murmullos en su derredor.
—¡Ah! ¿Eso es todo lo que se le ocurre responder? No es muy fuerte
su argumento—replicó Lebeziatnikoff—. ¡Llame a la policía; prestaré
mi juramento! Una sola cosa queda obscura para mí: el motivo que
le ha impulsado a cometer una acción tan baja. ¡Oh miserable,
cobarde!
Raskolnikoff avanzó, separándose del grupo.
—Yo puedo explicar su conducta, y si es menester, también prestaré
juramento—dijo con voz firme.
A primera vista, la tranquila seguridad del joven probó al público que
conocía a fondo el asunto, y que aquel embrollo estaba a punto de
llegar a su desenlace.
—Ahora lo comprendo todo—prosiguió Raskolnikoff dirigiéndose a
Lebeziatnikoff—. Desde el principio de este accidente había
sospechado detrás de esto alguna innoble intriga. Se fundaban mis
sospechas en ciertas circunstancias solamente de mí conocidas, y
que voy a revelar, porque presentan las cosas en su verdadero
aspecto. Usted, Andrés Semenovitch, ha iluminado perfectamente mi
espíritu; suplico a ustedes que me escuchen. Ese señor—continuó,
designando con un gesto a Pedro Petrovitch—, ha pedido
recientemente la mano de mi hermana Advocia Romanovna
Raskolnikoff. Llegado hace poco a San Petersburgo, vino a verme
anteayer; pero ya en nuestra primera entrevista tuvimos un choque
y le eché a la calle, como pueden declarar dos personas que estaban
presentes. Ese hombre es muy malo... Anteayer ignoraba yo que
viviese con usted, Andrés Semenovitch. Gracias a esta circunstancia,
anteayer, es decir, el día mismo de nuestra cuestión, se encontró
presente aquí en el momento en que, como amigo del difunto
Marmeladoff, le di un poco de dinero a su viuda Catalina Ivanovna
para atender a los gastos de los funerales de su marido.
Inmediatamente escribió a mi madre diciéndole que yo había dado
mi dinero, no a Catalina Ivanovna, sino a Sonia Semenovna,
calificando al mismo tiempo a esa joven con los más ultrajantes
adjetivos y dando a entender que yo tenía con ella relaciones
íntimas. Su objeto, como comprenderán ustedes, era enemistarme
con mi familia, insinuándole que yo gasto en disipaciones el dinero
de que ella se priva para atender a mis necesidades. Ayer noche, en
una entrevista con mi madre y mi hermana, entrevista a la cual
asistía él, he restablecido la verdad de los hechos que este señor
había desnaturalizado. «El dinero—dije—se lo di a Catalina Ivanovna
para pagar el entierro de su marido, y no a Sonia Semenovna a
quien aquel día había hablado por primera vez.» Furioso al ver que
sus calumnias no obtenían el resultado apetecido, insultó
groseramente a mi madre y a mi hermana. Siguióse un rompimiento
definitivo y se le echó a la calle. Todo ello pasó anoche. Reflexionen
ustedes ahora y comprenderán qué interés le guiaba, en las
circunstancias presentes, a inculpar a Sonia Semenovna si lograba
hacer pasar a esta joven por ladrona, y resultaba culpable a los ojos
de mi madre y de mi hermana, puesto que no tenía temor en
comprometer a ésta poniéndola en relaciones con una ladrona; él,
por el contrario, al atacarme a mí, salía a la defensa de mi hermana,
su futura esposa. En una palabra, éste era para él un medio de
enemistarme con los míos y de congraciarse con ellos. Con el mismo
golpe se vengaba también de mí, pensando que me intereso
vivamente por el honor y la tranquilidad de Sonia Semenovna. Tal es
el cálculo que ha hecho, y de este modo es como me explico yo su
conducta.
Raskolnikoff terminó su discurso, frecuentemente interrumpido por
las exclamaciones del público, que no perdía una sola frase. Pero, a
despecho de las interrupciones, su palabra conservó hasta el fin una
calma, una seguridad y una claridad imperturbables. Su voz
vibrante, su acento convencido y su rostro severo, conmovieron
profundamente al auditorio.
—Sí, sí; eso es—se apresuró a reconocer Lebeziatnikoff—, debe
usted tener razón, porque en el momento mismo en que entró Sonia
Semenovna en nuestro cuarto, me preguntó si había visto a usted y
si estaba entre los convidados de su madrastra, llevándome aparte
para preguntármelo en voz baja. Tenía, pues, necesidad de que
estuviese usted aquí. Sí, eso es.
Ludjin, mortalmente pálido, permanecía silencioso y sonreía con aire
despreciativo. Parecía buscar un medio de salir airosamente de aquel
trance. Quizá de buena gana hubiera hurtado el cuerpo en seguida;
pero en aquel momento la retirada era casi imposible: irse equivalía
a reconocer implícitamente las acusaciones que se le dirigían y
confesar que había calumniado a Sonia Semenovna.
Por otra parte, la actitud de los circunstantes no era nada
tranquilizadora. La mayoría de ellos estaban borrachos. Esta escena
atrajo a la habitación un número considerable de inquilinos que no
habían comido en casa de la viuda. Los polacos, muy excitados, no
cesaban de proferir en sus lenguas mil amenazas contra Pedro
Petrovitch.
Sonia escuchaba atentamente, pero no daba señales de haber
recobrado su presencia de ánimo; parecía que acababa de volver de
un desmayo. No apartaba los ojos de Raskolnikoff, comprendiendo
que en él estaba todo su apoyo. Catalina Ivanovna sufría
atrozmente: cada vez que respiraba se escapaba de su pecho un
ronco sonido.
La figura más estúpida era la de Amalia Ivanovna, que tenía aspecto
de no comprender nada, y con la boca abierta miraba como alelada.
Tan sólo veía que Pedro Petrovitch estaba metido en grave aprieto.
Raskolnikoff quiso tomar de nuevo la palabra, pero tuvo que
renunciar a ello a causa de que la gritería no hubiera permitido que
le oyeran. De todas partes llovían injurias y amenazas sobre Ludjin,
en derredor del cual se había formado un corro tan hostil como
compacto. El hombre de negocios sacó fuerzas de flaqueza, y
haciéndose cargo de que la partida estaba definitivamente perdida,
buscó recursos en la osadía.
—Permítanme ustedes, señores, permítanme ustedes, no me
cerquen de este modo; déjenme pasar—dijo, tratando de abrirse
paso al través del grupo que le rodeaba—. Aseguro a ustedes que es
inútil tratar de intimidarme con amenazas. No me asusto por tan
poca cosa. Por el contrario, ustedes deben temblar por el amparo
con que encubren un delito. El robo está más que probado, y yo
presentaré la correspondiente denuncia contra la autora y sus
encubridores. Los jueces son personas ilustradas y no borrachos, y
recusarán el testimonio de dos impíos, de dos revolucionarios
declarados que me acusan por un acto de venganza personal, como
ellos han cometido la necedad de afirmar. Sí, permítanme ustedes.
—No quiero respirar el mismo aire que usted, y le suplico que deje
mi cuarto; todo ha acabado entre nosotros—dijo Lebeziatnikoff—.
¡Cuando pienso que desde hace quince días vengo sudando sangre y
agua para exponerle...!
—Antes de ahora, Andrés Semenovitch, le he anunciado yo mismo
mi partida, precisamente cuando hacía usted instancias para
retenerme; ahora me limito a decirle que es usted un imbécil. Le
deseo que se cure de los ojos y del entendimiento. Permitan
ustedes, señores.
Logró abrirse paso; pero uno de los circunstantes, creyendo que las
injurias no eran castigo suficiente, tomó un vaso de la mesa y lo
lanzó con todas sus fuerzas contra Pedro Petrovitch. Por desgracia,
el proyectil alcanzó a Amalia Ivanovna, que se puso a dar gritos
horribles.
Al lanzar el vaso, el agresor perdió el equilibrio y cayó pesadamente
bajo la mesa. Ludjin entró en el cuarto de Lebeziatnikoff, y una hora
después dejó la casa.
Naturalmente tímida, Sonia sabía ya antes de esta aventura que su
situación la exponía a todo género de ataques, y que cualquiera
podía ultrajarla casi impunemente. Sin embargo, hasta entonces
había esperado desarmar la malevolencia de los demás, a fuerza de
circunspección, de humildad y de dulzura con todos y cada uno;
pero hasta esta ilusión se disipaba. Tenía, sin duda, bastante
paciencia para sufrir aún esto con resignación y casi sin murmurar;
pero en aquel momento la decepción era demasiado cruel. Aunque
su inocencia hubiese triunfado de la calumnia, y aun cuando su
primer terror hubiera pasado, al darse cuenta de lo ocurrido se le
oprimió dolorosamente el corazón ante el pensamiento de su
abandono y de su soledad en la vida. La joven tuvo una crisis
nerviosa, y, no pudiendo contenerse más, salió apresuradamente de
la sala y echó a correr a su casa. Su partida fué poco después de la
de Ludjin.
El vasazo recibido por Amalia Ivanovna produjo hilaridad general;
pero la patrona tomó muy a mal la cosa y revolvió su cólera contra
Catalina Ivanovna, la cual, vencida por el sufrimiento, había tenido
que echarse en su cama.
—¡Fuera de aquí! ¡En seguida! ¡Ea! ¡A la calle!
Mientras pronunciaba estas palabras con voz irritada, la señora
Lippevechzel tomaba todos los objetos pertenecientes a su inquilina
y los arrojaba en un montón en medio de la sala. Quebrantada, casi
desfallecida, la pobre Catalina Ivanovna saltó de la cama y se lanzó
sobre la patrona. Pero la lucha era demasiado desigual, y a Amalia
Ivanovna no le costó gran trabajo rechazar este asalto.
—¡Cómo! ¿No es bastante haber calumniado a Sonia, y esta mujer
se revuelve ahora contra mí? ¿El día en que han enterrado a mi
marido me expulsa; después de haber recibido mi hospitalidad, me
arroja a la calle con mis hijos? Pero, ¿a dónde voy a ir yo?—
sollozaba la infeliz mujer—. ¡Señor!—exclamó de repente con los
ojos centelleantes—. ¿Es posible que no haya justicia? ¿A quién
defenderás Tú, Dios mío, si no nos defiendes a nosotras, pobres
huérfanas? Pero ya veremos. Jueces y tribunales hay en la tierra;
recurriré a ellos; espere un poco, criatura mía. Poletchka, quédate
con los niños; yo volveré pronto. Si os echan, esperadme en la calle.
¡Veremos si hay justicia en la tierra!
Catalina Ivanovna se puso en la cabeza aquel mismo pañuelo verde
de que habló Marmeladoff en la taberna, y después, hendiendo la
multitud ebria y ruidosa de los inquilinos, que continuaban llenando
la sala, con el rostro inundado de lágrimas bajó a la calle resuelta a
ir, costase lo que costase, a buscar justicia en cualquier parte.
Poletchka, espantada, estrechó entre sus brazos a su hermano y a
su hermana, y los tres niños, acurrucados en el rincón inmediato al
cofre, esperaron temblando la vuelta de su madre.
Amalia Ivanovna, semejante a una furia, iba y venía por la
habitación aullando de rabia y arrojando al suelo cuanto le venía a
las manos.
Entre los inquilinos, unos comentaban el acontecimiento, otros
disputaban, algunos entonaban canciones...
«Ya es tiempo de que me vaya—pensó Raskolnikoff—. Veremos,
Sonia Semenovna, qué es lo que piensas ahora.»
Y se encaminó a casa de la joven.

Aunque Raskolnikoff tenía sus preocupaciones y disgustos, había

defendido valientemente la causa de la joven Sonia contra Ludjin.
Aparte del interés que le inspiraba la joven, había aprovechado con
gusto, después de los tormentos de por la mañana, la impresión de
sacudir impresiones que se le hacían insoportables. Por otro lado, su
próxima entrevista con Sonia le preocupaba y aun le aterraba por
momentos. Tenía que revelarle que había matado a Isabel, y
presintiendo todo lo que esta confesión tendría de penosa, se
esforzaba por apartar de ella el pensamiento.
Cuando al salir de casa de Catalina Ivanovna, había exclamado:
«Veremos, Sonia Semenovna, lo que piensas ahora», era el
combatiente animado por la lucha, excitado aún por su victoria sobre
Ludjin, el que había pronunciado aquella frase de desafío; pero, cosa
singular, cuando llegó a la casa de Kapernumoff, su seguridad le
abandonó de repente, dejando el puesto al temor. Se detuvo
indeciso ante la puerta y se preguntó: «¿Será preciso decir que he
matado a Isabel?» La pregunta era extraña, porque en el momento
en que él se la hacía comprendía la imposibilidad, no solamente de
no hacer esta confesión, sino aun la de diferirla un minuto.
No sabía por qué era imposible; únicamente lo sentía y estaba como
aplastado por esta dolorosa conciencia de su debilidad ante la
necesidad. Para ahorrarse nuevos tormentos, se apresuró a abrir la
puerta, y antes de franquear el umbral miró a Sonia. La joven estaba
sentada, con los codos apoyados en la mesita y el rostro oculto
entre las manos. Al ver a Raskolnikoff se levantó en seguida y fué a
su encuentro, como si lo hubiese esperado.
—¿Qué habría sido de mí sin usted?—dijo vivamente, en tanto que le
hacía pasar a la sala.
Parecía que entonces no pensaba más que en el servicio que le
había prestado el joven, y tenía prisa de darle las gracias. Después
esperó.
Raskolnikoff se aproximó a la mesa y se sentó en la silla que la joven
acababa de dejar. Sonia permaneció en pie, a dos pasos de él,
exactamente como el día anterior.
—Habrá usted observado—dijo advirtiendo que le temblaba la voz—
que la acusación no tenía otro fundamento que la posición social de
usted y las costumbres que ella implica. ¿Lo ha comprendido usted
así?
El rostro de Sonia se ensombreció.
—No me hable usted como ayer, le suplico que no vuelva a empezar.
He sufrido ya bastante...
Se apresuró a sonreír, temiendo que el reproche ofendiese al
visitante.
—Hace un momento he venido a casa como una loca. ¿Qué pasa allí
ahora? Yo quería volver, pero suponía que vendría usted.
Raskolnikoff le contó que Amalia Ivanovna acababa de echar de casa
a los Marmeladoff, y que Catalina Ivanovna había ido a buscar
justicia a cualquier parte.
—¡Ah, Dios mío!—exclamó Sonia—. ¡Vamos en seguida!—y tomó
apresuradamente su manteleta.
—¡Siempre lo mismo!—replicó Raskolnikoff contrariado—. Usted no
piensa más que en ellos. Quédese usted un momento conmigo.
—Pero... Catalina Ivanovna...
—Catalina Ivanovna vendrá aquí, no tenga usted duda—respondió
con tono de enfado el joven—. Culpa de usted será si no la
encuentra.
Sentóse Sonia, presa de cruel perplejidad. Raskolnikoff, con los ojos
bajos, reflexionaba.
—Hoy Ludjin quería, simplemente, desacreditarla a usted; lo
concedo—dijo sin mirar a Sonia—; sí, le hubiera convenido meterla a
usted en la cárcel, y si no hubiéramos estado allí Lebeziatnikoff y yo,
lo habría hecho. ¿No es así?
—Sí—dijo la joven con voz débil—. Sí—repitió maquinalmente,
distraída de la conversación a causa de la inquietud que
experimentaba.
—Podía, en efecto, no haber estado yo allí, y si Lebeziatnikoff se
encontró fué por casualidad.
Sonia guardó silencio.
—Si la hubieran llevado a usted a la cárcel, ¿qué habría sucedido?
¿Se acuerda usted de lo que dije ayer?
Sonia continuó callada, y el joven esperó un momento su respuesta.
—Pensaba que iba usted a exclamar: «¡Ah, no hable usted de eso!
¡No siga usted!»—repuso Raskolnikoff con risa un poco forzada—.
Vamos, ¿no dice usted nada?—preguntó al cabo de un minuto—.
Será preciso que sostenga yo solo la conversación. Ahí tiene usted;
tendría curiosidad por saber cómo resolvería usted una «cuestión»,
según dice Lebeziatnikoff (comenzaba a ser visible su turbación).
No; hablo seriamente. Suponga usted, Sonia, que estuviese
enterada de antemano de todos los proyectos de Ludjin; que usted
supiese que estos proyectos iban encaminados a asegurar la pérdida
de Catalina Ivanovna y de sus hijos, sin contar la de usted (porque
usted no hace caso de sí misma para nada). Suponga usted, por
consiguiente, que Poletchka fuese condenada a una existencia como
la de usted; siendo esto así, si dependiese de usted hacer que
pereciese Ludjin, o lo que es lo mismo, salvar a Catalina Ivanovna y
su familia, o dejar vivo a Ludjin para que cumpliese sus infames
designios; contésteme, ¿por cuál de las dos cosas se decidiría usted?
Sonia le miró con inquietud; bajo estas palabras pronunciadas con
voz vacilante, adivinaba algún pensamiento recóndito.
—¿Podría yo esperarme alguna pregunta por el estilo?—dijo la joven
interrogándole con los ojos.
—Es posible; pero conteste: ¿por quién se decidiría usted?
—¿Qué interés tiene usted en saber lo que haría en un caso que no
puede presentarse?—exclamó Sonia con repugnancia.
—¿De modo que dejaría vivir a Ludjin y que cometiese tales
infamias? No tiene usted valor para decirlo con franqueza.
—No conozco los secretos de la divina Providencia... ¿por qué me
pregunta usted lo que haría en un caso imposible? ¿A qué vienen
esas vanas preguntas? ¿Cómo la existencia de un hombre puede
depender de mi voluntad? ¿Quién me erige a mí árbitro de la vida y
la muerte de las personas?
—En el momento en que se hace intervenir a la divina Providencia,
no hay más que hablar—replicó con tono agrio Raskolnikoff.
—¡Dígame usted lo que tenga que decirme!—exclamó Sonia
angustiada—. ¿Otra vez con palabras encubiertas?... ¿Ha venido
usted sólo a atormentarme?
No pudo contenerse y se puso a llorar. Durante cinco minutos el
joven la contempló con expresión sombría.
—Tienes razón, Sonia—dijo en voz baja.
Se había operado en él un brusco cambio; su fingida serenidad, el
tono áspero que afectaba hacía un momento, había desaparecido de
pronto. Ahora, apenas se le oía.
—Te dije ayer que no vendría a pedir perdón, y casi con excusas he
comenzado mi entrevista. Al hablarte de Ludjin me acusaba, Sonia.
Quiso sonreír; pero, por más que hizo, su fisonomía permaneció
triste. Bajó la cabeza y se cubrió la cara con las manos. De repente
creyó advertir que detestaba a Sonia. Sorprendido y hasta aterrado
por tan extraño descubrimiento, levantó súbitamente la cabeza y
contempló de hito en hito a la joven. Esta fijaba en él una mirada
ansiosa, en la cual había amor. El odio desapareció
instantáneamente del corazón de Raskolnikoff. No era eso, habíase
engañado sobre la naturaleza de sus sentimientos; aquello sólo
significaba que había llegado el minuto fatal.
De nuevo ocultó su rostro entre las manos y bajó la cabeza;
palideció, se levantó, y después de haber mirado a Sonia, fué
maquinalmente a sentarse en el lecho sin proferir palabra.
La impresión de Raskolnikoff era entonces exactamente la misma
que había experimentado en pie, detrás de la vieja, cuando había
sacado el hacha del nudo corredizo, diciendo: «No hay un instante
que perder».
—¿Qué tiene usted?—preguntó Sonia sobrecogida.
El joven no pudo responder. Había contado con explicarse en muy
otras condiciones y no comprendía lo que pasaba por él. Sonia se
aproximó suavemente a Raskolnikoff; se sentó a su lado en la cama,
y esperó sin dejar de mirarlo. El corazón le latía como si fuera a
romperse. La situación se hacía insoportable. Raskolnikoff volvió
hacia la joven su rostro, mortalmente pálido, y movió los labios con
esfuerzo para hablar. Sonia estaba aterrada.
—¿Qué tiene usted?—repitió apartándose un poco de él.
—Nada, Sonia; no te asustes; esto no vale la pena. Verdaderamente,
es una tontería—murmuró con aire distraído—. ¿Por qué he venido a
atormentarte?—añadió de repente mirando a su interlocutora—. Sí,
¿por qué? No ceso de hacerme esta pregunta.
Se la había hecho quizá un cuarto de hora antes; pero en aquel
momento era tal su debilidad, que apenas tenía conciencia de sí
mismo; un temblor continuo agitaba su cuerpo.
—¡Cuánto sufre usted!—dijo la joven conmovida fijando los ojos en
él.
—Esto no es nada. He aquí de lo que se trata, Sonia. (Durante dos
segundos sonrió tristemente.) ¿Te acuerdas de lo que te dije ayer?
Sonia esperaba inquieta.
—Te dije, al separarme de ti, que quizá te diría adiós para siempre;
pero, que si venía hoy, sabrías quién fué el que mató a Isabel.
La joven se echó a temblar.
—Pues bien; ya sabes a lo que he venido.
—En efecto—dijo Sonia con voz temblorosa—; eso fué lo que me
dijo usted ayer. ¿Cómo sabe usted eso?—añadió vivamente.
Sonia respiraba trabajosamente y el rostro se le ponía cada vez más
pálido.
—Yo lo sé.
—¿Se le ha encontrado?—preguntó tímidamente después de un
minuto de silencio.
—No, no se le ha encontrado.
Siguióse un corto silencio.
—Entonces, ¿cómo lo sabe usted?—preguntó con voz casi
ininteligible.
Raskolnikoff se volvió hacia la joven y la miró con una fijeza singular.
—Adivina—dijo.
Sonia se estremeció convulsivamente.
—¿Por qué me asusta usted de ese modo?—preguntó con sonrisa
infantil.
—Si yo lo sé es porque estoy íntimamente relacionado con él—
repuso Raskolnikoff, cuya mirada seguía fija en la joven, como si no
tuviese fuerza para volver los ojos—. A esa Isabel no quería él
matarla; la mató sin premeditación... quería asesinar a la vieja
cuando estuviese sola... Fué a su casa; pero, cuando estaba en ella,
entró Isabel y la mató.
A estas palabras siguió un silencio lúgubre; durante un minuto
continuaron mirándose.
—¿De modo que no adivinas?—preguntó bruscamente, con la
sensación de un hombre que se arroja de lo alto de un campanario.
—No—balbuceó Sonia con voz apenas distinta.
—Busca bien.
Al pronunciar estas palabras, Raskolnikoff experimentó en el fondo
de sí mismo la impresión de frío glacial que le era tan conocida;
miraba a Sonia y de pronto le pareció ver a Isabel cuando la
desventurada se echó atrás ante el asesino, que avanzaba hacia ella
con el hacha levantada. En aquel momento supremo Isabel levantó
el brazo como hacen los niños pequeños cuando tienen miedo, y,
prontos a echarse a llorar, fijan una mirada inmóvil en el objeto que
les espanta. Del mismo modo el rostro de Sonia expresaba un terror
indecible; también ella extendió el brazo hacia adelante, rechazando
ligeramente a Raskolnikoff, y tocándole el pecho con la mano se
apartó poco a poco de él, sin cesar de mirarle fijamente. Su terror se
comunicó al joven, que se puso a mirarla asustado.
—¿Lo has adivinado?—murmuró por último.
—¡Dios mío!—exclamó Sonia.
Después se dejó caer sin fuerzas sobre el lecho y hundió el rostro en
la almohada. Pero al cabo de un instante se levantó con rápido
movimiento, se aproximó a él y tomándole las dos manos que sus
deditos estrecharon como tenazas, le miró largo rato de hito en hito.
¿No se había engañado? Así lo esperaba, pero apenas hubo fijado
los ojos en su interlocutor, la sospecha que había atravesado su alma
se trocó en certidumbre.
—¡Basta, Sonia, basta! Evítame más explicaciones—suplicó él con
voz quejumbrosa.
Lo que había pasado contrariaba todas sus previsiones, porque no
era ciertamente así como pensó él hacer la confesión de su crimen.
Sonia parecía que estaba fuera de sí. Saltó de su lecho y se fué al
centro de la habitación retorciéndose las manos; después volvió
bruscamente sobre sus pasos y se sentó, hombro con hombro, al
lado del joven. De repente se echó a temblar, lanzó un grito y, sin
saber lo que hacía, cayó de rodillas delante de Raskolnikoff.
—¡Está usted perdido!—exclamó con acento desesperado; y
levantándose súbitamente se arrojó a su cuello, le besó y le acarició.
Raskolnikoff se separó de ella, y contemplándola con triste sonrisa,
dijo:
—No te comprendo, Sonia. Me abrazas después de haberte contado
eso... No tienes conciencia de lo que haces.
La joven no oyó esta observación.

exclamó en un arranque de piedad, y rompió en sollozos.
Raskolnikoff sintió invadida su alma por un sentimiento que desde
hacía largo tiempo no había experimentado. No trató de luchar
contra esta impresión; dos lágrimas brotaron de sus ojos y rodaron
silenciosas por sus mejillas.
—¿No me abandonarás, Sonia?—preguntó con mirada casi
suplicante.
—¡No, no! ¡Jamás, jamás!—gritó—. Te seguiré, te seguiré a todas
partes. ¡Oh Dios mío!... ¡Oh, qué desgraciada soy!... ¿Por qué? ¿por
qué no te he conocido antes? ¿Por qué no habrás venido...?
—Ya ves que lo he hecho—interrumpió Raskolnikoff.
—¡Ahora! ¡Oh! ¿Qué podemos hacer ahora?... ¡Juntos! ¡Juntos!—
repitió con una especie de exaltación y se puso a abrazar al joven—.
¡Iré contigo a presidio!
Estas últimas palabras produjeron en Raskolnikoff una sensación
penosa y apareció en sus labios una sonrisa amarga y casi altanera.
—Es que yo, malditas las ganas que tengo de ir a presidio.
Sonia volvió rápidamente hacia él los ojos. Hasta entonces había
sentido una inmensa piedad por aquel hombre desgraciado; pero lo
que acababa de decir el joven y el tono con que fué pronunciado,
recordaron bruscamente a Sonia que aquel desgraciado era un
asesino. La muchacha le dirigió una mirada de asombro. No sabía
aún cómo ni por qué había llegado a convertirse en criminal. En
aquel momento, todas estas cuestiones se presentaban ante su
espíritu y de nuevo dudó.
«¡El, él un asesino! ¿Es posible?»
—Pero esto no es verdad; ¿dónde estoy?—dijo como si despertase
de un terrible sueño—. ¿Cómo, siendo usted lo que es, ha podido
resolverse a hacer eso?... ¿Pero por qué lo ha hecho?
—Por robar. Cesa ya, Sonia—respondió algo contrariado el joven.
La muchacha se quedó estupefacta.
—¿Tenías hambre?—exclamó en seguida—. ¿Era para socorrer a tu
madre?... ¿Sí?
—No, Sonia, no—replicó Raskolnikoff bajando la cabeza—. Mi miseria
no era tan grande... Quería, en efecto, ayudar a mi madre... pero no
fué ésta la verdadera razón... No me atormentes, Sonia.
—¿Pero es posible que esto sea verdad?—gritó la joven, dando una
palmada—. ¿Es esto posible? ¿Hay medio de creerlo? ¿Ha matado
usted para robar? ¡Usted que se despoja de todo en favor de los
pobres! ¡Ah!... ¿El dinero que usted dió a mi madrastra...? ¿Ese
dinero...?
—¡No, Sonia, no!—interrumpió vivamente Raskolnikoff—. Ese dinero
no procedía de aquello, tranquilízate; me lo envió mi madre cuando
yo estaba enfermo, por medio de un comerciante, y acababa de
recibirlo cuando lo di... Razumikin lo vió. Ese dinero me pertenecía.
Sonia escuchaba perpleja y esforzándose por comprender.
—Por lo demás, en cuanto al dinero de la vieja... yo no sé lo que
había—añadió vacilando—; le quité del cuello una bolsa de piel que
parecía bien repleta... pero no me enteré del contenido, sin duda
porque me faltó tiempo... Me apoderé de varias cosas, gemelos,
cadenas de reloj... Esos objetos, lo mismo que la bolsa, los oculté al
día siguiente bajo una piedra grande en un corral situado en la
perspectiva V***. Todo ello está allí todavía.
Sonia escuchaba con avidez.
—Pero, ¿por qué no ha tomado usted nada, puesto que mató para
robar?—replicó como agarrándose a una última y muy vaga
esperanza.
—No sé... no he decidido aún sí tomaré o no ese dinero—respondió
Raskolnikoff con la misma voz vacilante, y luego sonrió—. ¡Qué
historia tan tonta te acabo de contar!
«¿Estará loco?», se preguntó Sonia; pero rechazó en seguida esta
idea. No, allí había alguna otra cosa para ella inexplicable; pero en
vano ponía en prensa su mente.
—¿Sabes lo que quiero decirte, Sonia?—repuso él con voz vibrante
—. Si únicamente la necesidad me hubiese impulsado al asesinato—
prosiguió recalcando cada una de sus palabras, y su mirada tenía
algo de enigmático—, yo sería ahora feliz. Sábelo. ¿Qué te importa el
motivo, puesto que acabo de confesarte que he obrado mal?—
exclamó tras de una corta pausa—. ¿Para qué ese triunfo sobre mí?
¡Ah, Sonia! ¿Es para esto para lo que he venido a tu casa?
La joven quiso hablar, pero se calló.
—Ayer te propuse que vivieses conmigo porque yo no tengo a nadie
sino a ti.
—¿Por que querías que viviese contigo?—preguntó tímidamente

—No para robar ni matar, puedes estar tranquila—contestó
Raskolnikoff riendo sardónicamente—; nosotros no somos de la
misma cepa... Y mira, acabo de comprender ahora por qué te invité
ayer a venir conmigo. Cuando te dirigía esta petición, no sabía cuál
era su objeto... lo veo ahora. No tengo nada más que un deseo:
¡Que no me abandones! ¿No me dejarás, Sonia?
La joven le apretó la mano.
—¿Y por qué? ¿Por qué te he dicho yo esto? ¿por qué te he hecho
esta confesión?—exclamó Raskolnikoff al cabo de unos segundos,
mirándole con infinita compasión a la vez que con la desesperación
más profunda—. Veo que esperas mis explicaciones, Sonia; pero,
¿qué he de decirte? Nada comprenderías, y yo no haría otra cosa
que afligirte cada vez más. Vamos, veo que lloras y que empiezas de
nuevo a abrazarme; ¿por qué me abrazas? ¿Es porque, falto de valor
para llevar mi cruz, me libro así de este peso, cargando con él a otra
persona; porque he buscado en el sufrimiento ajeno un alivio a mis
pesares? ¿Y puedes amar a semejante cobarde?
—¿Pero no sufres tú también?—exclamó Sonia.
Hubo de nuevo un acceso de sensibilidad.
—Sonia, tengo el corazón enfermo, recapacita... Esto puede explicar
multitud de cosas. Porque soy malo he venido. Hay muchos que no
lo hubiesen hecho; pero yo soy cobarde y miserable. ¿Por qué he
venido? ¡Jamás me lo perdonaré!
—No, no; has hecho bien en venir—repuso Sonia—. Vale más que lo
sepa todo; es mucho mejor.
Raskolnikoff la miró con expresión dolorosa.
—He querido ser un Napoleón... por eso he matado. ¿Comprendes
ahora?
—No—respondió cándidamente Sonia con voz tímida—; pero habla,
habla; lo comprenderé todo.
—¿Que lo comprenderás? Está bien; ya veremos.
Durante un momento, Raskolnikoff estuvo pensativo recogiendo sus
ideas.
—El hecho es que cierto día me hice esta pregunta: Si Napoleón, por
ejemplo, hubiese estado en mi lugar, si no hubiese tenido para
comenzar su carrera ni Tolón ni Egipto, ni el paso de San Bernardo,
sino que en lugar de estas brillantes empresas se hubiese
encontrado ante la necesidad de cometer un asesinato para asegurar
su porvenir, ¿hubiera renunciado a la idea de matar a una vieja y de
robarle tres mil rublos? ¿Hubiera pensado que tal acción era
demasiado innoble y demasiado criminal? Yo me he devanado
durante algún tiempo los sesos con esta pregunta, y no he podido
menos de experimentar un sentimiento de vergüenza, cuando he
reconocido, por fin, que no sólo no hubiera vacilado, sino que no
hubiese comprendido la posibilidad de una vacilación. No teniendo
ninguna otra salida no se hubiera andado con escrúpulos. Desde que
me hice esta reflexión ya no tenía que vacilar; la autoridad de
Napoleón me cubría. ¿Encuentras esto risible? Tienes razón, Sonia.
La joven no tenía el menor deseo de reír.
—Háblame con franqueza, sin ejemplos—dijo con voz tímida y
apenas distinta.
Raskolnikoff se volvió hacia ella, la miró con tristeza y le tomó las

—Tienes razón, Sonia. Todo esto es absurdo, carece de sindéresis,
no es más que palabrería... Mira, mi madre, como sabes, está casi
sin recursos. La casualidad quiso que mi hermana recibiese
esmerada educación y estuviera condenada al oficio de institutriz.
Todas sus esperanzas reposaban exclusivamente sobre mí. Entré en
la Universidad; pero, falto de medios, me vi obligado a interrumpir
mis estudios. Supongamos que los hubiese continuado; yendo bien
las cosas, hubiera podido, en diez o quince años, ser nombrado
profesor de Gimnasio o empleado con mil rublos de sueldo. (Parecía
que estaba recitando una lección). Pero de aquí a entonces, los
cuidados y los disgustos habrían destruído la salud de mi madre y de
mi hermana... quizá les hubiera ocurrido algo peor. Privarse de todo,
dejar a mi madre en la miseria, sufrir el deshonor de mi hermana...
¿es esto vivir? Y todo ello para llegar, ¿a qué? Después de haber
visto morir a los míos, podría fundar una familia, dejando, al morir, a
mi mujer y a mis hijos sin un pedazo de pan. Pues bien, yo me dije
que con el dinero de la vieja cesaría de ser una carga para mi
madre; que podría volver a entrar en la Universidad y asegurar un
porvenir. Ahí lo tienes explicado todo. Claro que he hecho mal en
matar a la vieja... pero, en fin, ¡basta!
Raskolnikoff no tenía ya fuerzas, y bajó la cabeza como agobiado.
—¡Oh, no es eso, no es eso!—gritó Sonia con voz quejumbrosa—.
¡Esto no es posible!... ¡No, no; hay alguna otra causa!...
—¡Supones que hay otra causa! Te engañas, he dicho la verdad.

que tuve que dejar la Universidad. Pues bien; quizá hubiera podido
seguir asistiendo a ella. Mi madre habría pagado las matrículas; yo
hubiera ganado con mi trabajo para vestir y comer y habría quizás
llegado... Tenía lecciones retribuídas con cincuenta kopeks.
Razumikin trabaja bien; pero yo estaba exasperado y no quise. Sí,
estaba exasperado, ésa es la palabra. Entonces me metí en mi casa
como la araña en su rincón. Ya conoces mi tugurio, has estado en
él... ¿Sabes tú, Sonia, que el alma se ahoga en las habitaciones
bajas y estrechas? ¡Oh, lo que yo odiaba ese cuartucho! y, sin
embargo, no quería salir de él; me pasaba allí días enteros, sin
querer trabajar, no cuidándome ni de comer. «Si Nastachiuska me

Estaba muy irritado para pedir nada. Había renunciado al estudio y
vendido todos mis libros; una pulgada de polvo hay sobre mis notas
y cuadernos. Por la noche no tenía luz. Para comprar una vela me
hubiera sido forzoso trabajar y no quería; prefería fantasear
acostado en mi sofá. Inútil es decirte cuáles eran mis ocupaciones...

demás son imbéciles, ¿por qué no procuras ser más inteligente que

Mientras hablaba, Raskolnikoff miraba a Sonia; pero no se
preocupaba por saber si ella le comprendía. Era presa de una triste
exaltación. Desde largo tiempo no había hablado con nadie. La joven
comprendió que aquel feroz catecismo eran su fe y su ley.
—Entonces me convencí, Sonia—continuó acalorándose cada vez
más—, de que el poder no se toma más que bajándose. Todo estriba
en esto. Desde el día en que se me presentó esa verdad clara como
el sol, he querido atreverme, y he matado. He tratado de hacer un
acto de audacia, Sonia; tal ha sido el móvil de mi acción.
—¡Cállese usted! ¡Cállese usted!—exclamó la joven fuera de sí—. Se
ha alejado usted de Dios, y Dios le ha herido y le ha entregado al
demonio.
—A propósito, Sonia; cuando todas estas ideas venían a visitarme en
