Conrad
Conrad Jarrett is a teenager who suffers from depression. This depression stems from the
passing of his brother. His brother died in a boating accident. This accident has traumatized
Conrad. Conrad has even tried to take his own life, but his attempt failed. Conrad’s dominant
characteristic would be his pessimistic attitude. His pessimistic attitude accurately describes who
Conrad truly is. In Chapter five Conrad states, “The exchange about the razor blades reminded
him of something good about the hospital; nobody hid anything there.” Conrad talks about that
he was only comfortable in the hospital where he was put on suicide watch. In Chapter thirteen
he states, “’No,’ he says. ‘There's a guy in the closet. I don't even know him, that's the
problem.’”. Conrad says this as he is hiding his true self inside and doesn’t know how to
properly let out his emotions. In chapter nine Conrad says, “He must learn more control, cannot
allow himself the luxury of anger.” Conrad states this due to the fact that if he doesn’t control his
pessimistic attitude, then he will constantly be angry. Conrad Jarret’s depression and suicidal
tendencies add to his pessimistic attitude that dominates his other characteristics.
