Introductory Message
Welcome to Capstone Research!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the
Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide
the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Capstone Research Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Capstone Research Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning
even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

CAPSTONE RESEARCH ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 3

Hypothesis

I. Learning Competency with Code

Formulate possible outcomes of the investigations, or in the case of mathematics research,

conjectures about the mathematical problem or topic (STEM_RP12-IIa-e-5)

II. Background Information for Learners

In previous lessons you have learned that hypothesis is a tentative explanation to a

research question about variables (Baraceros, 2017). A hypothesis is tested through analytical
investigation to prove how true or false it is which you call as hypothesis testing (Watkins,
2016).
Furthermore, recall that a hypothesis is of two types:
1. Null hypothesis: a type of hypothesis in which you assume that the sample observations
are purely by chance. It is denoted by H0.
2. Alternate hypothesis: is a hypothesis in which you assume that sample observations are
not by chance. It is affected by some non-random situation. An alternate hypothesis is
denoted by H1 or Ha (Sahoo, 2003; Gupta & Kapoor, 2002; & Watkins, 2016).

Study the examples below:

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to determine the molluscicidal activity of tea seed powder
against Golden Apple Snail (Pomacae canaliculata)

Specific Research Question

1. Is there a significant difference in the mortality of golden apple snails exposed to varying
concentrations of tea seed powder?

Hypothesis
Ho: There is no significant difference in the mortality of golden apple snails exposed to varying
concentrations of tea seed powder
Ha: There is a significant difference in the mortality of golden apple snails exposed to varying
concentrations of tea seed powder

Decision
Using inferential statistical analysis, rejection or acceptance of Ho will be determined.

In the IMRaD format, the hypothesis is not exactly written similar to the given example.
However, assumptions are stated in the last paragraph of the Introduction and the outcome of
the statistical analysis is stated and discussed in the Results and Discussion section of the
IMRaD. Example: The presence of bioactive compounds in the family of tobacco plant tested
for molluscicidal property, it’s assumed that it will exhibit similar property dependent on its
concentration.

III. Activity Proper

Directions: Working in small group or individual along with your research teacher as
facilitator, read and follow the procedure carefully. Write your answers in your logbook.

Activity 1: True or False?

Materials
• Readings-Literature review in the field of study and/or photos of the identified problem

Given a sample concept map of a particular learner in the problem identification process,
answer the guide questions to come up with the proposed study.

Situation: For example, you are doing a comparative study on the effectiveness of various
protein diet supplementations (African night crawlers worm, golden snail meat, and super
worm, and commercials pellets) for catfish weight gained.

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aimed to determine the effect of various protein diet
supplementations on the growth of catfish.

Specifically, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the amount of soluble proteins in the different protein diet supplement?
2. What are the weights gained of catfish after three months of feeding?
3. Is there a significant difference in the weight gained of catfish fed with the different
protein diet supplementation?

Guide Questions:

1. Which specific research question needs a hypothesis for hypothesis testing?

___________________________________________________________________________________

2. Which research questions need descriptive hypothesis?

____________________________________________________________________________________
3. Hypothesis is a tentative solution to the problem. What is the foundation of the
researchers’ formulation of hypothesis?

___________________________________________________________________________________
Activity 2. My Research Question/s and Hypothesis/es
Directions:
1. Collaborate with small group or work individually on the writing of the research questions.

2. Based from the research questions, align hypothesis of the proposed study.

3. Answer the guide questions concisely.

4. Write your main activities and answers in your logbook.
Guide Questions:

1. What are supposed to be measured in the specific research questions?

____________________________________________________________________________________
2. What is the KIND of factor or variable being measured in the specific research questions?

____________________________________________________________________________________

3. What is the importance of formulating the hypothesis of the study?

____________________________________________________________________________________

4. What are the logical factors in making appropriate hypothesis for your study?

____________________________________________________________________________________

IV. Reflection:

In real-life situation, is it enough to make one hypothesis for a certain event or

phenomenon? Why?
V. Answer Key:

Activity 1
1. Question no.3 (Is there a significant difference in the weight gained of catfish fed with the
different protein diet supplementation?)
2. Questions 1 and 2
1. What is the amount of soluble proteins in the different protein diet supplement?
2. What are the weight gained of catfish after three months of feeding?)
3. Readings or Review of Related Literature or Science concepts behind the field
Activity 2.
1. Variable/factors
2. Dependent Variables
3. Possible answers:
• Establish the direction of the study
• Scientific hunch will be validated/verified.
4. Possible Answers
• Based on the formulated research questions or objectives
• Based on literature review
• Based on scientific concepts related to the study
