1.0 MODULE DESCRIPTION

This module is designed to expose students to the principles of management. Students will
apply and evaluate the module concepts via case studies and “real life” situations in
organizations. Students will also analyse situations, identify appropriate actions, and
recommend managerial decisions to achieve an organization’s goals.

2.0 MODULE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the module, the student should:

2.1 Understand the nature of management and the development of management thought.
2.2 Recognise the relationship between management and its various environments.
2.3 Demonstrate how the functions of management impact the performance of an
organization.

2.4 Apply concepts learned in the module within a local and global context.

3.0 SPECIFIC MODULE CONTENT AND CONTEXT

3.1 Fundamentals of Management 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.1.1 Define Management and the Organization.
3.1.2 Differentiate the Functions of Management and the type of management activity
associated with each.
3.1.3 Contrast Efficiency and Effectiveness and state their importance to organizational
performance.
3.1.4 Describe the management levels and their Horizontal and Vertical Differences.
3.1.5 Compare conceptual, human, and technical skills and their relevance to managers and
employees.
3.1.6 Differentiate the various roles under the categories of Informational, Decisional and
Interpersonal, that managers perform in organizations.
3.2 The Evolution of Management Thinking 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.2.1 Describe the historical forces influenced the practice of management.
3.2.2 Distinguish the major components of the Classical and Humanistic Management
Perspectives and their Relevance to Modern Management Practices.
3.2.3 Explain the Management Science Perspective to Organizations.
3.2.4 Distinguish the major concepts of Systems Theory, Contingency View of
Management, Total Quality Management and their applicability to current
organizations.
3.2.5 Explain the concept of the Learning Organization and show how its components
impact today’s management and organizations.
3.2.6 Explain how the Technology Driven Workplace is changing the nature of
management.

3.3 The Environment and Corporate Culture 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.3.1 Differentiate between the External and Internal environments; the General and Task
Environment and describe the dimensions of each.
3.3.2 Define Corporate Culture.
3.3.3 Explain the use of Symbols, Stories, Heroes, Slogans and Ceremonies and their
importance to management and Corporate Culture.
3.3.4 Distinguish between different types of Culture.

3.4 Managing in a Global Environment 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.4.1 Explain the concept of a ‘borderless world’.
3.4.2 Differentiate between Stages of Globalization.
3.4.3 Define International Management

3.4.4 Distinguish between the Economic, Socio-Cultural, and Legal-Political environments
throughout the world and
3.4.4.1 Explain how they impact business operations.
3.4.5 Describe the characteristics of a Multinational Corporation.

3.5 Managerial Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.5.1 Define Ethics and relate Ethics to behaviour governed by Law and Free Choice.
3.5.2 Distinguish between the Utilitarian, Individualism, Moral-Rights, and Justice Approaches
in Ethical Decision making.
3.5.3 Explain how Individuals and Organizational Factors influence ethical decision making.
3.5.4 Describe Corporate Social Responsibility in relation to the Economic, Legal, Ethical,
And Discretionary criteria.
3.5.5 Explain how Ethical Organizations are created.

3.6 Organizational Goal Setting and Planning 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.6.1 Contrast Goals and Plans in relation to the Planning Process.
3.6.2 Explain how an Organization’s Mission influences its Goals and Plans.
3.6.3 Differentiate between the different types of Goals and Plans within an organization.
3.6.4 Outline the Criteria for Effective Goals.
3.6.5 Relate the essential steps in the Management by Objectives (MBO) process.
3.6.6 Distinguish between Standing and Single-Use Plans
3.6.7 Propose relevant options in Planning for a Turbulent Environment: Contingency Planning

3.7 Managerial Decision Making 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.8.1 Explain the importance of Decision Making to the organization.
3.8.2 Differentiate between Programmed and Non-Programmed Decisions and relate
the various degrees of Certainty and Uncertainty.
3.8.3 Describe the characteristics of different Decision-Making Models.
3.8.4 Outline the Decision-Making process, using current organizational issues.
3.8.5 Distinguish between the Personal Decision-Making Styles used by managers.

3.8 Structure and Fundamentals of Organizing 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.8.1 Define organizing and organization structure.
3.8.2 Outline the main features of the organization chart – Work Specialization, Chain
of Command, Span of Management
3.8.3 Differentiate between tall and flat structures, centralization and decentralization.
3.8.4 Relate the concepts of departmentalization and functional structure.
3.8.5 Explain, by way of illustration, the various approaches to structure.
3.8.6 Determine the advantages and disadvantages of the structural approaches.
3.8.7 Relate how structure can be used to achieve an organization’s strategic goals.

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.9.1 Define Teams.
3.9.2 Identify the differences between Teams and Groups.
3.9.3 Contrast Dysfunctional and Effective Team Characteristics.
3.9.4 Explain how leaders contribute to team success.
3.9.5 Describe the Stages of Team Development.
3.9.6 Compare Vertical and Horizontal Teams.

3.10 Human Resource Management 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.10.1 Explain the role of human resource management in organizational strategic
planning.
3.10.2 Relate legislations and societal trends that influence human resource management.
3.10.3 The goals of Human Resource Management
3.10.4 Differentiate the various means human resource managers use to meet their goals

3.11 Leadership in Organizations 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.11.1 Define leadership.
3.11.2 Relate the importance of leadership to organizations.
3.11.3 Differentiate between management and leadership.
3.11.4 Recognize leadership traits and personal characteristics associated with effective
leadership.
3.11.5 Outline the behavioural approaches to leadership and their impact on
organizations.
3.11.6 Describe the sources of power.

3.12 Managerial Control 3 Hours

At the end of this unit students should be able to:


3.12.1 Define organizational control as a key managerial function.
3.12.2 Distinguish between the types of control within the control process.
3.12.3 Outline the steps in the feedback control model.
3.12.4 Differentiate between bureaucratic and decentralized control.

3.13 Innovation and Change 3 Hours
At the end of this unit students should be able to:
3.13.1 Differentiate between the innovative strategies for new products and
technologies.
3.13.2 Identify the resources of entrepreneurial organizations may employ to
initiate change.
4.0 LEARNING AND TEACHING APPROACHES
The instructional methods will include lectures and tutorials. The lectures are designed to give an
overview of the main concepts in each unit. As it relates to the tutorials, a variety of methods will
be used, inclusive of:

 Group Discussions
 Various types of presentations; may include activities such as
o Writing of Newsletters
o Speeches
o Games
o Case Studies
 Desk Research

These are all designed to assist the student to develop their analytical and problem-solving
skills to aid organizations solve their problems and maximise potential opportunities as well as
help in their personal development.

5.0 ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES AND ATTENDANCE


This module is broken down into 60% Coursework and 40% Final Examination.
