FAKE REALITY

1.1 INTRODUCTION: -
VR stands for Virtual Reality, where users immerse themselves in a specifically designed
simulated environment for a specific purpose. For example, medical training, games, etc.,
which are explored without borders and boundaries in 360 degrees.
Using virtual reality (VR) with Revit, a building information modeling (BIM) software, can
greatly enhance the architectural design and visualization process. Here's how it typically
works

1. Modeling in Revit: Architects and designers create their building models in Revit
as they normally would. Revit allows for the creation of detailed 3D models that
include architectural and structural.

2. Exporting to VR: Once the model is complete, it can be exported into a format
compatible with VR software. Some plugins or third-party tools facilitate this
process, allowing users to export their Revit models directly into VR-ready formats.

3. VR Visualization: With the model in VR, architects and clients can immerse
themselves in a virtual representation of the building. They can explore the space, get
a sense of scale, and experience the design firsthand. This immersive experience
enables stakeholders to better understand the design intent and make more informed
decisions.

4. Collaboration and Iteration: VR facilitates collaboration among team members

and stakeholders. Designers can easily communicate their ideas, receive feedback,
and make real-time changes to the model while in VR. This iterative process helps
refine the design and ensures that everyone is on the same page.

1.2 LITERATURE REVIEW: -

When conducting a literature review on the use of virtual reality (VR) for building design in
Revit, you'll want to focus on research articles, case studies, and industry reports that
specifically address this intersection. Here's how you can structure your literature review.
Virtual reality and Revit: Provide an overview of virtual reality technology and its
applications in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). Introduce Revit as a
popular BIM software used for building design and emphasize the potential benefits of
integrating VR with Revit for architectural visualization and collaboration. BIM stand for
Building Information Modeling. It's a process used in the architecture, engineering, and

construction industries to digitally represent physical and functional characteristics of

places. BIM encompasses not just the 3D geometrical representation, but also spatial
relationships, geographic information, quantities and properties of building components, and
more. It's used for planning, design, construction, and management of buildings and
infrastructure throughout their entire lifecycle
Historical Context: Discuss the historical development of VR technology in the AEC
industry, highlighting key milestones and advancements that have led to its integration with
Revit. Include references to early research and case studies that explore the use of VR for
architectural design and visualization.
Benefits and challenges: Summarize the benefits of using VR for building design in Revit,
such as improved spatial understanding, enhanced stakeholder communication, and faster
decision-making. Discuss the challenges and limitations associated with VR integration, such
as interoperability issues, performance constraints, and learning curves for user. Case Studies
and examples: Present case studies and examples of projects that have successfully used VR
with Revit for building design and visualization. Include details about the design process, VR
implementation, and outcomes achieved, such as increased client satisfaction or design
validation.

1.3 OBJECTIVE: -
The objective of virtual reality (VR) is to create immersive, computer-generated
environments that simulate physical presence in real or imagined worlds. VR technology
aims to transport users to a completely different place or experience, allowing them to
interact with the environment and even alter it in some cases. This can be achieved through
the use of specialized headsets, motion-tracking sensors, and other peripherals. The primary
goals of VR include:

1. Presence: To create a sense of "presence" where users feel as if they are truly present
in the virtual environment, rather than just observing it from distance.

2. Interactivity: To enable user to interact with and manipulate objects within virtual
environment, fostering a sense of agency and engagement.

3. Exploration and Entertainment: To provide users with novel and entertaining

experiences, such as exploring fantastical worlds, engaging in virtual adventures or
participating in simulated training scenarios.

4. Communication and collaboration: To facilitate communication and collaboration

among users, even if they are physically distant, by allowing them to inhabit a shared
virtual space and interact with each other in real time. Real-time communication
between a designer and a site engineer is crucial for ensuring smooth project
coordination, resolving issues promptly, and maintaining alignment between design
intentions and on-site implementation. Here are some effective methods for
facilitating real-time communication between these two roles:

a) Project Management Software: Utilize project management platforms like

Asana, Trello, or Basecamp. These tools allow for real-time updates, file
sharing, task assignments, and messaging, keeping everyone on the same page.
b) Instant messaging apps: Platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Discord
offer real-time messaging, file sharing, and even video conferencing
capabilities. You can create specific channels or groups for discussions related
to design and on-site activities
c) Video Conferencing: Platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, or Skype enable
face-to-face communication, which can be particularly useful for discussing
complex design issues or conducting virtual site inspection.
d) Collaborative Design Tools: Tools like Figma or Adobe XD allow designers
and engineers to collaborate on design concepts in real-time. This ensures that
any design changes or updates are immediately communicated and understood
by both parties.
e) Mobile apps: Mobile apps like WhatsApp or Telegram provide instant
messaging functionality that can be accessed on the go, making it easy for
designers and engineers to communicate regardless of their location.
f) Cloud-Based Document Sharing: Platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox
facilitate real-time document sharing and collaboration. Designers can upload
design files, blueprints, or specifications, which engineers can access and
provide feedback on in real-time.
g) Regularly scheduled meetings or check-ins between the designer and site
engineer can provide an opportunity to discuss progress, address concerns, and
ensure alignment on project objectives.
h) VR Reality meetings: In some cases, especially for large-scale projects,

VR meetings can be conducted using platforms like Spatial or Meeting VR.

This allows designers and engineers to virtually walk through the design
together, even if they are in different locations.
By leveraging these communication methods, designers and site engineers can
collaborate effectively, resolve issues in a timely manner, and ensure that the project
progresses smoothly from design to implementation.

1.4 METHODOLOGY: -
Using Revit and Sketch Up with virtual reality (VR) can be an exciting way to
visualize and experience architectural designs in an immersive environment. Here's a
general methodology for integrating Revit with VR:

1. Modeling in Revit: Start by creating your architectural model in Revit as you

normally would. Ensure that your model is detailed and accurately represents
the design you want to visualize in VR. The area of this building is
59’6”x53’0”. Total sqft = 3013.5 ft / 334.8yard

2. Modeling in SketchUp is a user-friendly 3D modeling software known for its

intuitive interface and powerful tools. Users can create detailed 3D models by
drawing shapes and extruding them into 3D forms. The software offers various
drawing and editing tools, including push/pull for extrusions, follow me for path
extrusions, and offset for creating parallel lines. SketchUp also supports
organization through layers and groups, while its extensive library of materials
and textures allows for realistic rendering. With practice and exploration, users
can create a wide range of designs, from architectural models to furniture
prototypes.
