polygons and visualizes congruent polygons (M5GE-IIIdc-19-20,d-22)

Lesson 1 - Visualizing, Naming, Describing, and Drawing Polygons

with 5 or More Sides

Objectives: After completing this self-learning activity sheet, you should be able to:

1. visualize and name polygons with five sides or more; and

2. describe and draw polygons with 5 or more sides.

Materials: paper, pencil/ ballpen.

Polygon is a closed plane figure made up of several line segments that are
joined together. This polygon is called an octagon because it has eight sides.

Polygons are classified according to its sides.

LESSON 2: Describing and Comparing Properties of Polygons

(Regular and Irregular Polygons)

Objectives: After completing this self-learning activity sheet, you should be able to:

1. describe and compare properties of polygons; and

2. draw regular and irregular polygons.

Directions: Name the following polygons. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper.

There are two types of polygons, regular and irregular polygons.

In the first activity, polygons in item numbers 1 and 5 are examples of regular
polygons, while item numbers 2, 3 and 4 are examples of irregular polygons.

REGULAR POLYGONS IRREGULAR POLYGONS

What is a regular polygon?

Regular polygon is a polygon whose all sides and angles are equal.

Let’s take a look on the illustration.

B C
4 mm 4 mm
A D

100
F E

Questions:
1. Is the illustration a polygon?
2. What kind of polygon is it?
3. How many sides are there?

5
The illustration is a polygon. It is a hexagon because it has six sides. Let’s
enumerate all the sides of the hexagon.

AB = 4 mm DE = 4 mm
BC = 4 mm EF = 4 mm
CD = 4 mm FA = 4 mm
We also observe that the regular hexagon has equal sides and equal angle. We
can classify it as a regular polygon. Given that angle F measures 100°, let’s give the
measure of all the angles.

A = 100° D = 100°
B = 100° E = 100°
C = 100° F = 100°

Therefore, the illustration above (regular hexagon) is a regular polygon.

Irregular polygon is a polygon with sides of any lengths and angles of any sizes.

One example of an irregular polygon is a trapezoid like the figure below.

Observe the unequal sides and angles of the trapezoid.

Here are other examples of irregular polygons.

LESSON 3 : Visualizing Congruent Polygons

Objective: After completing this self-learning activity sheet, you should be able to:

1. visualize congruent polygons.

Directions: Tell whether each pair of figures have the same shape or not. Write YES
if the same and NO if not, on a separate sheet of paper.
