LEARNING ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Week Covered: Week 9

Learning Competency: Solves routine and non-routine problems involving

circumference of a circle (M5ME-IIIj-71)

Objectives: After completing this self-learning activity sheet, you should be able
to:

1. apply steps in solving word problems involving circumference of a circle;

and
2. solve routine and non-routine problems involving circumference of a
circle.

Materials:

notebooks, pad paper and ball pen

Directions: Find the circumference of the given circles below. Write your
solutions and your answers on a separate sheet of paper. .

1. 2.

8 cm 6.5 cm

DO_Q3_MATH5_SLAS9
In the previous self-learning activity sheet you learned how to find the
circumference of a circle. This time, let us apply what you have learned in our
previous lesson in solving problems involving circumference of a circle.

To solve the problem, let us use the four-step plan.

Study the examples below.

Example 1:

A circular mini swimming pool of

Jodie has a radius of 2.5 meters. If she
walks around it, how many meters will
that be?

Steps Answer
Understand
 What is asked in the -distance around the mini pool
problem?
 What are the given - radius of 2.5 meters
information?
Plan
 What operation or -Use the formula
strategy will be used? C = 2r

Solve
 Compute or perform the C = 2r
strategy. = 2(3.14) 2.5m
= 15.7 m
Check Use the formula for the circumference
 Verify if the answer is when the diameter is given.
correct. Remember that diameter = 2(radius)
Hence, d = 2 (2.5)
d=5
Therefore, C = d
= 3.14 (5 m)
= 15.7 m
So, the distance around the pool is
15.7 meters.

Example 2:

A circular garden has a diameter of 3 meters. What is the circumference

of the garden?

Steps Answer
Understand
 What is asked in the -circumference of the garden
problem? - diameter of 3 meters
 What are the given
information?
Plan
 What operation or -Use the formula
strategy will be used? C = d
Solve
 Compute or perform the C = d
strategy. = (3.14) 3 m
= 9.42 m
Check Use the formula for the circumference
 Verify if the answer is when the radius is given.
correct. Remember that r = ½ of the diameter
Hence, r = ½ of 3
r = 1.5 m
Therefore, C = 2r
= 2(3.14) (1.5 m)
= 9.42 m
So, the circumference of the garden is
9.42 meters.

Example 3:

A pool at the center of a park is circular in shape. If you will walk around it,
the distance is 78.5 meters. What is the diameter of the park?

Steps Answer
Understand
 What is asked in the -diameter of the park
problem?
 What are the given - 78.5 m (distance around the park)
information?
Plan
 What operation or -Use the formula
strategy will be used? C = d

DO_Q3_MATH5_SLAS9
Solve
 Compute or perform the C = d
strategy. 78.5m = (3.14) d -To find the diameter,
divide both sides
by the value of
 = 3.14
78.5 3.14
= d
3.14 3.14

25 = d , hence
d = 25 m
Check Use the formula for the circumference
 Verify if the answer is C = d
correct. 78.5 = 3.14(25)
78.5 = 78.5
Hence, the diameter of the park is
25 meters
Example 4:

The circumference of the tire of a fire truck is 113.04 inches. Find the
radius of the tire.

Steps Answer
Understand
 What is asked in the - radius of the tire
problem?
 What are the given - 113.04 inches (circumference of
information? the tire)
Plan
 What operation or -Use the formula
strategy will be used? C = 2r
Solve
 Compute or perform the C = 2r
strategy. 113.04 = 2(3.14)r
113.04 = 6.28r To find the radius,
divide both sides
by the product of
(2) = 3.14(2)
= 6.28
113.04 6.28
= r
6.28 6.28

18 = r , hence
r = 18 in

DO_Q3_MATH5_SLAS9
Check Use the formula for the circumference
 Verify if the answer is C = 2r
correct. 113.04 = 2(3.14)(18)
113.04 = 113.04
Hence, the radius of the tire is
18 inches.

Directions: Answer the following activities on a separate sheet of paper.
