Dispersion
In Physics, 'dispersion' In Mathematics, In statistics, it refers to the degree
is the property by the term to which numerical data are

set of data is. homogenous or heterogeneous the
data is.
Variability
▪ Goal: to describe how spread out
the scores are in a distribution
▪ A smaller dispersion of scores
arising from the comparison often
indicates more consistency and
more reliability.
Measures of Variability/Dispersion

1. Range
2. Average Deviation or Mean
Absolute Deviation
3. Variance
4. Standard Deviation
Range
▪ The range is the difference between the highest(H) and the
lowest (L) scores in a set of data.
▪ Range is the most obvious way to describe how spread out
the scores are.
Problem: Completely determined by the two extreme
values and ignores the other scores in the distribution.
It often does not give an accurate description of the
variability for the entire distribution.
Average or Mean Absolute
Deviation (MAD)
o The average of the sum of the absolute difference of each
measure from the mean.
o Advantages:
⮚ It is easy to calculate and simple to understand.
⮚ The mean deviation take into account all values in the sample.
⮚ It is a good comparison measure as it is based on the deviations from the mid-value.
o Disadvantage:
⮚ Negative and positive signs are ignored because we take the absolute
value. This can lead to inaccuracies in the result.
Average or Mean Absolute Deviation

Step 1: Calculate the value of the mean of the given data values.
Step 2: Subtract the value of the central point (mean) from each
data point.
Step 3: Now take the absolute of the values obtained in step 2.
Step 4: Take the sum of all the values obtained in step 3.
Step 5: Divide this value by the total number of observations.

STANDARD DEVIATION
Measure of Variability
1 What is a variance σ2

A measure of how far a set of

data are dispersed out from
their mean or average value.
The variance is
defined as the
average of the
squared deviation
from the mean.
2 Properties of Variance

It is always non-negative since each

term in the variance sum is Variance always has squared
squared and therefore the result is units.
either positive or zero.
3 Standard Deviation

A standard deviation ( σ) is a measure of how dispersed

the data is in relation to the mean. Low, or small,
standard deviation indicates data are clustered tightly
around the mean, and high, or large, standard deviation
indicates data are more spread out.
Properties of standard deviation
It shows how much variation (such as spread,
dispersion, spread,) from the mean exists.

It is a popular measure of variability because it returns to

the original units of measure of the data set.
Differences
Mean is the average of the range of
given data values.

A variance is used to measure how far the

data values are dispersed from the mean.

Standard deviation is used to calculate the

amount of dispersion of the given data set
values.
