Rule # 1: -CIAN ENDING

cian – where words end in c;


common in occupations.
Example…Music  Musician…
cian: As in “musician,” we use “cian” in
approximately 17 words that describe a
person’s profession or hobby.

There are a few nouns with -cian endings
and they usually mean occupations or
jobs: optician, politician, musician,
beautician, dietician, electrician,
technician, statistician, physician,
magician...
Rule # 2: -SION ENDING

sion – where the base word


ends in d/de or s/se (e.g.
explode, confuse).

Spell with “tion” as is


“nation” 99% of the time,
spell with “sion” as in
“expression”
in 47 words, and spell with
“cian” as in “musician” in
16 words.
sion:We use “sion” in
approximately 27 words that already
end
with an “ss” as in
expressexpression and in 10 other
words that contain the word
“mission”
as in “admission.”
Not that many nouns have -sion endings. They are
often formed from verbs which end with -d, -de, -
se, -t.
to collide - collision, to comprehend - comprehension,
infuse - infusion.
persuade- persuasion, explode - explosion, televise -
television...
Also pension, persuasion, occasion, suspension,
decision...

Rule # 3: Memorize words ending with SSION

MEMORIZE WORDS ENDING WITH SSION


-ssion endings.
When words end in -ss just add –
ion.
discuss - discussion, confess - confession, obsess -
obsession, possession, expression, recession,
profession, procession.
Also mission, passion, session

Memorize nine words that contain


the word “mission”:

There are only a few -tian endings and they usually mean place of origin or a belief: Martian,
Dalmatian, Christian, Faustian.
