Unit 2.2 Separating mixtures

A. A mixture or Not a Mixture. Look at these materials and identify whether they are a
mixture or not. Check all mixtures.

B. Mixtures can be separated in different ways. Choose how to separate the following
mixtures and complete the sentence of the reason.

1. Paper clips can be separated from paper strips

by a magnet. Paper clips are magnetic but

papers are not.

2. A bowl of cereal is a mixture. We can separate

the cereal pieces by hand (hand-picking). We

can separate them into shapes (sizes, colour).


3. To separate sand from gravel, we use a sieve.

Smaller materials like sand can pass/go

through the sieve but not the bigger gravel.

4. A mixture of pepper and water can be

separated by a filter/filtering. Water can

pass through the tiny holes of the filter paper

but not pepper.

Unit 2.3 Dissolving

A. Soluble or Insoluble. Identify the following materials whether they can be dissolved in
water or not. Check all soluble solids.

B. Complete the sentences below.

1. Solids that dissolve in water are soluble.


2. Solids that do not dissolve in water are insoluble.
3. Water is clear or transparent.
4. Sugar will dissolve in water. You can’t see it but the water tastes sweet.
