Introduction
Introduction
Road safety is an important aspect that has significant consequences for individuals,
communities, and society as a whole. Road accidents not only leads to significant human
suffering but also damage substantial economic costs (Wiethoff et al., 2012). To address this
problem, transportation authorities have prioritized efforts to improve road safety and reduce the
number of accidents.
One promising approach to enhancing road safety is the use of advanced knowledge and
technology in the automotive industry. This paper explores the effectiveness of such knowledge
in reducing accidents and improving overall road safety.
Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) remain a leading cause of injury, disability, and death
globally. Despite advancements in vehicle safety, human error continues to be a major
contributing factor to accidents. Advanced knowledge of automotive technology, including
ADAS and autonomous driving systems, holds the potential to mitigate human error and improve
road safety.
These systems can monitor driving conditions, detect potential hazards, and intervene to
prevent accidents. While there's growing enthusiasm for the potential of automotive technology
to improve safety, there's a need for further research to understand the effectiveness of these
systems in real-world conditions. This research will contribute to closing this gap by examining
the relationship between advanced automotive knowledge and accident reduction.
Theoretical Framework
Research Questions
Extensive research has been conducted to assess the benefits of active safety systems and their
impact on accident reduction. Studies have shown that the integration of sensors, electronics, and
real-time processing capabilities has been a crucial enabler in the widespread adoption of these
technologies. (Ahangarnejad et al., 2020)
The data from naturalistic driving studies has demonstrated that active safety systems are
instrumental in improving vehicle safety, particularly at higher speeds and under adverse road
conditions. (Ahangarnejad et al., 2020)
Vehicle design is fundamental to a safe traffic system which requires safe interaction between
users, vehicles and the road environment. Vehicle design, which takes account of the behavioural
and physical limitations of road users, can address a range of risk factors and help to reduce
exposure to risk, crash involvement and crash injury severity (T.Sivakumara and R.Krishnarajb,
2013)
