SUB-TOPIC 2: KINDS OF POSTURAL DEFECTS

1. CONTENT: KYPHOSIS (Round shoulder): Kyphosis is a defect of the spine due to a deficiency of
vitamin D which is essential for the building of strong bones. The upper spine becomes excessively
curved as a result of squeezed chest muscles and overstretched back muscles.

Causes of Kyphosis are;


• Carrying a heavy load on the back
• Sitting an infant too early
• Weak chest/ back muscles
• Accident
• Diseases
• Lack of physical exercise

Treatment of Kyphosis includes;


▪ participation in sports
▪ Rest and immobilization
▪ diet rich in vitamin D
▪ x-ray examination
▪ Physiotherapy and supportive brace

2. LORDOSIS (Overextension of the lumber region): Lordosis is referred to excessive lateral curvature
of the lumbar region. This is due to the exaggerated tilt of the pelvis in congenital hip dislocation.
Also, weak abdominal muscles due to the pressure exerted on it by fats in the abdomen

Causes of Lordosis includes;

Treatment of Lordosis are;

away from the midline of the body. A valgus deformity of the knee is a knock-knee deformity.

Classification of Rhythmic Activities
Rhythmic activities are classified into three areas:

Fundamental Rhythms: Fundamental rhythms include walking, running, skipping, and other

The general purpose of a program of fundamental rhythm is to provide a variety of basic movement
experiences. This will make students move effectively, and efficiently and develop a sense of rhythms.
Creative Rhythms: Creative rhythms involve movement that initiates animals or man. In creative
rhythms, the student expresses himself by trying to be something. The student in his own mind takes on
the identity, for instance, of a soldier’s giant, horse, elephant, train, or object. He proceed to interpret this
identity with expressive movement to be accompanied by a suitable rhythm.
Dramatic Rhythms: This could be based on a story and idea, a poem and emotion, or a song. It could
take almost any form. A variety of rhythmic backgrounds can accompany the unfolding of the story. As
the story progresses, suitable rhythmic background can be selected. A piece of music selected should have
sufficient changes of tempo and pattern to provide different kinds and quality of background.
A general idea or plan of action can be selected and fitted to the music. Students should express mood
and feelings. A piece of music is played, generally, a recording student however, can interpret the music
differently.
