CONCEPT OF ICT OR ICT IN EDUCATION

It is well accepted that Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have an immense potential
to impact the education of children , teachers , teacher educators and others, and provide never and
more effective ways of mitigating some of the challenges being faced by the educational system of our
country . These technologies distinguish themselves by their rapid evolution , continuously changing the
modes of engagement with them.

 INTRODUCTION OF ICT

ICT has become a buzzword while talking about technology and its applications.ICT is used in various
business and management functions but not in the improving the quality of education. Quality of
education has been issue of concern in the absence of standard parameters of to measure the quality .
The hardware , software , the methods and know how required or used in acquiring , storing , processing
and displaying data and information is collectively known as Information Technology (IT). Also on the
other hand , many developments and achievement s took place in communication technology sector
after second world war. Hardware , know how , programs and methods used in ensuring that message is
transmitted correctly , efficiently and cost effectively are collectively known as communication
technology (CT). Both of these technologies became complementary to each other means progress in
one alone is not much beneficial . Hence IT and CT started moving together and a new term was coined
named as INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT). Convergence of these two
technologies gave birth to ICT.

 MEANING AND DEFINITION OF ICT

ICT stands for “Information and communication technologies”.

I- INFORMATION (Information can be defined as data processed into a form that result is
meaningful to the recipient and is of real value in current on future action.)

C-COMMUNICATION ( The communication word is derived from Latin word ‘communis’ which
means common. Communication can be defined as the mutual exchange of facts , ideas , two or more
persons is known as Communication.)

T-TECHNOLOGY (The word technology is derived from Greek word ‘Tecnikos ‘ and ‘techne’
means Art and craft.Technology can be referred as a system having various interrelated components
arranged by scientific method to obtain desire objectives.)

This includes the internet , wireless networks , cell phones ,and other communication mediums. ICT is
technology that supports activities involving information. such activities include gathering , processing ,
storing and presenting data.
DEFINITION OF ICT

 “The TECHNOLOGY by which information can be transmitted effectively in the same form to the
receiver. So , that the desire objectives can be realized , is called ICT.”
 “Information and communication technologies (ICT) is defined as a diverse set of technological
tools and resources used to transmit , store , create , share or exchange information.”
 ICT is an extensional term for information technology (IT) which mainly focuses on the role of
unified communications and integrated with telecommunications which includes telephones
lines & wireless signals and computers .

COMPONENTS OF ICT

The major components of the ICT system are as follows:

 Software : Software is a set of instructions , data or programs used to operate computers and
execute specific tasks. In other words , the software is a computer program that provides a set
of instructions to execute a user’s commands and tell the computer what to do. For example
like MS-word ,MS-Excel , PowerPoint , etc.
 Hardware : The physical components that make up a computer system. Includes all input
devices ( A piece of equipment/hardware which helps us enter data into a computer is called an
input device . For example : keyboard , mouse , etc.), output devices ( An output device is any
hardware device used to send data from computer to another device . For example: monitor ,
printer, CD, etc ), Storage devices ( It is a piece of hardware that is primarily used to stored data.
For example: pen drive, hard disk , memory card.)
 Cloud computing : It is a model for allowing convenient , on demand access from anywhere , to
a shared pool of computing resources. It is a collection of – i) compute, ii) storage, iii)
networking.
 Transaction : it is a completed agreement between a buyer and a seller to exchange goods,
services , or financial assets in return for money.
 Data : It can be defined as a set of recorded facts , numbers , or events that have no meaning .
 Internet :The internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world .
 Communication Technologies : The transfer of messages among people and machines through
the use of technology.
