ACTIVE LEARNING

● Active learning is a pedagogical practice that places student learning at its

centre. It focuses on how students learn, not just on what they learn.
● Active learning involves learners actively participating in the learning process by
connecting new information with existing knowledge to develop a deeper
understanding.
● Active learning is about encouraging students to ‘think hard;, rather than
passively receive information.
● Active learning encourages students to take responsibility for their learning and
supports them in becoming independent and confident students in school and
beyond.
● Active learning encourages more complex thought processes such as evaluating,
analysing and sythesising, which foster a greater number of neural connections
in the brain.
● Active learning is intellectually stimulating and encourages a higher level of
academic discussion.
● Misconceptions of active learning include misunderstanding of thinking more
about the activity to design than about the learning.
● Active learning does not have to involve complicated tasks.
