Technical information about IHI’s study
Sub. : 25T Ladle Furnace

1. Ladle
We can propose the ladle having revised profile to fit the existing equipment such as pre-heater,
ladle hanger and shot making. Trunnion span, height and diameter of the ladle are almost the
same as the existing ladle. But our ladle has straight figure, not conical figure of the existing
ladle because we have to keep space inside the ladle for immersing the powder injection lance.
So the location of the ladle at the shot making is little bit front side comparing the existing
location. Difference may be 40 to 50mm. Two sets of spout are equipped; one is “charging ladle
type” and another is “teeming ladle type”. We keep about 600mm freeboard on the 28t metal
level.

2. Refractory
We studied the refractory layout using Yotai’s ware brick of 150mm thickness. So the effective
space inside ladle becomes relatively small.

3. Roof
Diameter of the roof is smaller than that of IHI’s original design. To keep hole for the powder
injection lance, we will shift the center of BCD of the electrodes to transformer side to the extent
so as not to cause the heat damage on the side refractory of the ladle.
And we add the large size working hole on the roof to ease the oxygen lancing work using two
lancing pipes.

4. Countermeasures against spilling metal from the bottom of the ladle


We propose the attached pitfall under the LF position. The spilled metal pitfall is placed outside
the parking area of the transfer car not to cause the damage on the car by heat from the hot
metal. Refractory lining will be made inside of the pitfall.
And we will add the some refractory lining on the car against spilling slag from the top of the
ladle during heating by oxygen lancing and necessary heat shield around the ladle.

5. Porous plug protection


As our investigation about the gas blowing method through the porous plug during transportation
by crane, the attached method, Gas Holder System was found. They become familiar among
steel making companies recently in Japan. They work not only at transportation period by
crane but also during shot making, so the maintenance of the plug will be minimized.
6. Transfer car
We will apply single trunnion type instead of double trunnion that is used for ladle tilting.
Tilting mechanism will be similar to the method used at shot making. Due to this design change
the height of ladle put on the car is higher than the original level. So the structure around the LF
should be modified. And width of the car will be larger than the original design size. So we want
Antam to confirm the effective clearance between column -8 and column -9. I will send the
schematic to Antam tomorrow.

7. Dedusting system
We are studying the equipment arrangement of the dedusting system on the space that is
instructed by Antam. And we will use high voltage motor of 6.6kV, 220kW for the fan.
Consequently high voltage line will be newly made for the motor consisting 12kV VCB,
step-down transformer 11kV/6.6kV, motor starter circuit and related protection relays.
I will send the layout plan and single line diagram to Antam tomorrow.

8. Furnace transformer
We were discussing with Toshiba this week to exchange the specifications. And we had the
specifications and the quotation from them today. The specifications are almost similar to the
original specifications. And we had the information about on-load tap changer also.

9. UPS system
We will propose 10kVA UPS system for backup of PLC, HMI and signal input.
UPS panel will be newly made and AC200V as control power is distributed to each control
system. UPS manufacturer will be Mitsubishi.

10. Reporting and calculation package for operator guidance


We will add the PC with monitor and A4 size inkjet printer. They are connected via EtherNet with
master PLC. Heat report will be made and printed out by using Microsoft Excel template.
And we will made calculation functions on PC of metal temperature expectation by oxygen lance
and arc heating, additive amount calculation and powder amount calculation. Guidance will be
displayed on the touch panel screen. Heat-up by oxygen calculation program at LF is newly
made.
