INTRODUCTION
Imagine a world without social media. Today,
more than 60% of the global population uses
platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or
WhatsApp to communicate. We are more
connected than ever, but this connectivity has
deeply impacted the way we interact and
communicate. In this presentation, I’ll explore
the positive and negative effects of social media
on communication, as well as its consequences
on our relational skills.

The positive impacts of social
media on communication
Let’s start with the advantages.

First, accessibility. Social media has broken down geographical barriers. Whether
you're in Casablanca or Tokyo, a simple click is enough to instantly exchange messages
with loved ones. For example, WhatsApp allows sharing videos, messages, and even
video calls in the blink of an eye.

Second, social media has become a platform for self-expression. It allows everyone to
share ideas, creativity, or opinions with the world. A single post can reach thousands of
people. For instance, influencers share recipes, advice, or inspiring moments, building
online communities.

Lastly, social media promotes collective mobilization. Global campaigns like


#BlackLivesMatter or ecological initiatives have emerged thanks to the power of social
media. These platforms effectively and quickly raise awareness for important causes to
a large audience.

The negative impacts of social
media on communication
But it’s not all perfect.

First, social media can make interactions more superficial. With quick messages
or emojis, we often lose the depth of face-to-face conversations. The absence of
body language and tone can even lead to misunderstandings.

Next, it can create a paradoxical social isolation. We spend so much time


scrolling through our screens that we neglect real-life interactions. Studies show
that excessive social media use can lead to feelings of loneliness.

Finally, there’s disinformation. Fake news spreads at an alarming rate, sometimes


creating unnecessary tensions or dangerous situations. For instance, during the
pandemic, false information about vaccines caused a lot of confusion and fear.

The impact on
communication skills
Social media has also changed our communication skills.

On the one hand, it has transformed our language. Abbreviations like


"LOL" and emojis simplify our exchanges but can also impoverish our
formal vocabulary.

On the other hand, it has reduced our active listening. We are often
distracted by notifications or the urge to respond quickly, which affects
the quality of our conversations.

However, it also has positive effects, such as multiculturalism.


Platforms like YouTube or TikTok help us discover new languages and
cultures, even though this can sometimes come at the expense of local
languages.

CONCLUSION
In summary, social media has revolutionized communication,
making it more accessible and dynamic. But it also presents
challenges, such as superficial interactions, isolation, and
disinformation. So, the question remains: how can we
maximize its benefits while minimizing its negative
impacts?

To conclude, I invite you to reflect on your own use of social


media. Are you truly connected, or are you disconnected
from those around you? It’s up to us to find the balance
between the virtual and the real.
