Course This course will provide students with the knowledge and
Description understanding of the basic functional areas of business management.
It lays solid foundation to further develop skills and understanding of
the broader business environment. The course is designed to
encourage students to develop their communication, analytical and
computer skills, creativity, and other qualities necessary for success in
busness life.
Course The course intends to enable students:
Objectives a) Describe the structure of a typical enterprise; understand the
processes that lead to its growth and their implications for its
structure.
b) Describe the principal functions of a business enterprise.
c) Understand the interrelationships between different business
functions.
d) Identify and demonstrate relevant management skills relating to
self and others.
Learning Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able

a) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic
principles and concepts in Business Administration
b) Apply knowledge of the major functional areas in fundamentals
of business administration.
c) Appreciate the role managers play in successful management
of a business enterprise

Outline Nature of the enterprise: 7
Structure; the significance of profit; importance of
objectives nature of objectives in private and public
sectors enterprises and the organization: the features,
strengths and weaknesses of small scale enterprises .
Growth of the enterprise: 5
Pressures for and methods of attaining growth;
implications of growth for management structure;
specialization and co- ordination, nature of personal and
bureaucratic structures and strengths and weaknesses of
each, the ownership-control controversy, managerial
objectives and their implications for nature of business
enterprise; communications, interpersonal processes
and group processes, organizational culture, handling
change and conflict. The role of the manager and
management styles.

The nature and elements of production of goods and
services; types of production systems and their
implications for management; costs and their relationship
to growth and size of the enterprise.
Finance: 7
Needs for short, medium and long-term finance; sources
of finance, techniques of investment appraisal, elements
of financial management and management accounting,
profit and loss account, balance sheets and measures of
financial performance.
People at work: 7
Role of HRM in organizations; planning, recruitment and
selection process, training and reward systems,
motivation and employment contracts.
Purchasing and the organization: 6
Purchasing and uncertainty: organization of purchasing
and stock control outline of methods of stock control
Elements of marketing: 6
The difference between marketing and selling, the
marketing mix, advertising and product promotion;
channels of distribution and sales management
