DAY 7

FOUNDATIONS OF NC MATH 1 SOLVE INEQUALITIES NOTES

OBJECTIVE:
- solve and graph inequalities

INEQUALITIES
- a problem that has an inequality symbol instead of an equal sign

- inequality symbols < LESS THAN (POINTS LEFT)

< LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO (POINTS LEFT & UNDERLINED)

> GREATER THAN (POINTS RIGHT)

> GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO (POINTS RIGHT & UNDERLINED)

- solve using the same strategies as we used with equations. *BE CAREFUL OF SIGNS*

- NEW STUFF:
1. If you multiply or divide using a negative number, FLIP THE INEQUALITY SYMBOL

2. If the variable is on the right side of the problem, FLIP THE WHOLE ANSWER

- GRAPH ON A NUMBER LINE:

< OPEN CIRCLE ; SHADE LEFT

(not underlined) (points left)

> OPEN CIRCLE ; SHADE RIGHT

(not underlined) (points right)

< CLOSED CIRCLE ; SHADE LEFT

(is underlined) (points left)

> CLOSED CIRCLE ; SHADE RIGHT

(is underlined) (points right)

EXAMPLES: solve and graph each inequality

1. 3(2x + 5) < 39 2. 4(-x + 9) > 16

DAY 7
3. 2 > 2(4x – 7) 4. 5(x + 7) – 7x < -9

5. 50 < 2(3x – 10) + 4x 6. 9 > 3(4x – 7) – 15x
