Bilingual Education programs
Bilingual Education programs
Imagine a scenario in which you are the superintendent at a major urban school district. You would like to
implement Bilingual Education programs in several elementary schools, in which language-majority (i.e.,
monolingual speakers of English only) and language-minority students (i.e., students whose home
language is another one than English) are combined. However, you are concerned about buy-in from
stakeholders such as parents and school personnel who might not be as well-informed about the benefits
of bilingualism.
In an essay of 1400-1600 words, explain the brain-based mechanisms at work, and then discuss both
cognitive and academic benefits of bilingualism. Please cite all sources appropriately, both in text and in
your bibliography, following APA style (7th edition).
The point of this work is less about memorization and more about doctorate-level synthesis. You will be
asked to advocate for a particular issue germane to both to the courses. This stance requires you to a)
know the course material well, b) synthesize course material, c) write with a clear and concise argument,
and d) back up this synthesized argument with correct APA 7 citations.
To prepare, think first of what your answer/argument will be. Then, write out an outline that answers all
parts of the question and keeps your argument in mind. Third, go back to your course materials and find
data sources to back up your argument. Fourth, draft a response to the question. Fifth, revise and ensure
that every word, sentence, and paragraph is in service to both a) your argument and b) all parts of the
question.
Please remember that less is often more. A well-synthesized argument will pass, while a "data dump" of
various sources neither linked nor synthesized will not.
Finally, make sure you review the rubric posted below before you start and after you have finished!
