The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) was introduced in Kenya in 2017 to

address various challenges within the country’s education system and to

better align it with the evolving needs of the society and economy. Here are
the key reasons why CBC was introduced:

1. Shift from Exam-Centric Education

The traditional system in Kenya was heavily focused on rote learning and
high-stakes examinations, which did not necessarily reflect a student’s
practical abilities. The CBC aims to move away from the over-reliance on
exams and promotes continuous assessment of students’ competencies,
skills, and practical abilities.

2. Holistic Development of Learners

The CBC emphasizes the development of the whole child, including cognitive,
emotional, social, and physical aspects. It focuses on building critical life
skills, creativity, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork, which are
essential for success in a rapidly changing world.

3. Addressing Skills Gaps in the Workforce

One of the driving forces behind the CBC is the need to align education with
the labor market. By focusing on competencies, the curriculum aims to equip
students with practical skills that can directly be applied in the workforce,
reducing the skills mismatch between what the education system produces
and what employers need.

4. Fostering Innovation and Creativity

CBC encourages students to be innovative, think critically, and approach

problems with creative solutions. This is in response to the growing need for
young people to adapt to a knowledge-driven economy where innovation and
entrepreneurial skills are highly valued.

5. Promoting Lifelong Learning

The curriculum encourages continuous learning and adaptability, essential

qualities in an era where technology and job markets evolve rapidly. It fosters
a culture of lifelong learning, where individuals can continue to develop new
skills throughout their lives.

6. Personalized Learning
The CBC focuses on tailoring education to individual students’ strengths,
interests, and abilities. This flexibility allows students to progress at their
own pace, promoting more effective and meaningful learning experiences.

7. Inclusive Education

The CBC is designed to be more inclusive by accommodating a wide range of

learning needs and abilities. It places emphasis on creating a more equitable
system, where all students, including those with disabilities, can thrive.

8. Global Trends in Education

Globally, there has been a shift towards competency-based education as

countries recognize the importance of equipping students with real-world
skills rather than just theoretical knowledge. CBC in Kenya was partly
introduced to keep pace with these global educational trends.

9. Improved Assessment Methods

The CBC introduces a more diverse and comprehensive system of

assessment that goes beyond examinations to include projects, portfolios,
and practical work. This allows for a more accurate reflection of students’
capabilities and progress.

10. Enhanced Teacher Roles

The CBC encourages teachers to play a more active role in guiding students’
learning, rather than just delivering content. It calls for more teacher
creativity and adaptability in responding to students’ needs, fostering a more
interactive and engaging classroom environment.

In summary, the Competency-Based Curriculum was introduced to ensure

that Kenyan education is more responsive to the changing demands of
society, focusing on skills development, lifelong learning, and preparing
students for the challenges of the future workforce.
