GALLERY WALK 2024

Title of the Project: Swift Stream

I. Background of the Project

Flooding became a serious problem for lots of urban and rural societies worldwide due to
rapid urbanization, poor waste management strategies, and climate change-induced intense weather
conditions especially here in the Philippines. The problems and challenges associated with keeping
waters clear and free-flowing have led to repeated damage from infrastructure, loss of productive
economies, and public safety and health risks. This is proven by PAGASA which states that the
most destructive calamities man has to deal with is flood. The smallest flood will cause some
inconveniences. A really big flood can cause millions, even billions of pesos damages in roads and
bridges, buildings, and other economic infrastructures, in losses in agricultural crops and livestock,
and loss of productivity in industry, commerce, and trade. This is further compounded by the
immeasurable loss in terms of human life directly caused by floods, accompanied by hardships and
consequential socioeconomic problems of involuntary human relocation and psychological factors
among victims subjected to flooding.

In flood-prone areas, conventional drainage is usually overwhelmed by the volumes of

water and debris that become too much for them, causing clogs and back flow. These are worse in
cases where improper waste disposal leaves trash and debris to get into the drainage systems,
creating a vicious cycle. The Swift Stream project addresses such challenges with an innovative
underground drainage system designed to allow water to pass freely while effectively blocking
trash and debris. This system is designed with the advanced filtration technology combined with
the robust infrastructure that allows smooth passage of water during heavy rainfall, minimizing the
efforts needed for its maintenance.

Swift Stream will target government bodies and community leaders. This will be an answer
to flood mitigation that is scalable and sustainable. This may reduce flooding cases, ensure
preservation of life and property, and enhance the quality of life of residents in danger-prone zones.
Swift Stream offers a practical approach, with benefits on several levels: it's cost-effective and
allows for environmental sensitivity

Beyond the specific application of the solution, Swift Stream also addresses and combats
more overarching and broader concerns on the issues of sustainability, resilience, and economic
feasibility. As it zeroes in and interacts directly with government agencies
and leaders from the community, this project will therefore provide a solution that
is scalable yet adaptive, meaning to respond to the very unique and particular needs
of numerous diverse communities. The conscious and strategic targeting will therefore ensure
that the project has a good potential of reducing flooding occurrences as well as its severity and
consequently saving lives and properties, improving the general quality of life of individuals
living in the at-risk areas.
II. Objective of the Project
The swift stream system aims to:

To Reduce Flooding in Prone Areas.

This is through the development of a sophisticated underground drainage system, designed to
prevent water from gathering. This will serve to minimize the risks of flooding in communities
that are flood-prone.

To Improve Water Flow Efficiency .

Free and unobstructed flow of rain water is required to attain maximum performance. This can be
done by incorporating modern filtration systems that have been developed to trap trash and debris,
hence preventing them from clogging the drainage network.

To Promote sustainability improvement for waste management.

Interceptors will collect waste and debris at major points of
drainage greatly which reduces quantities and amounts of
pollution entering into waterways directly contributing towards environmental
conservation and preservations of natural ecosystems.

To Enhance Public Safety and Health.

Water stagnation will not spread dangerous waterborne diseases. This will ensure the
improvement of the health and safety of community residents who use clean water for their
welfare.

To Reduce Economic Losses from Flood Damage.

Protection of critical infrastructure, homes, and businesses from flooding destruction, which is
usually severe and extensive, thus lowering the costs of repairs and recoveries that governments
and residents bear.

To Be Cost-Effective and Scalable.

Develop and establish such a system that not only is economically feasible but also practicable
for implementation in any community size, whether a small town or a large metropolitan
city while ensuring the access and adaptability to different settings.

To Empower Governments and Community Leaders.

Provide decision-makers with an effective tool for flood
control, thereby giving strong support to current initiatives in sustainable urban
development, bettering strategies centered on disaster preparedness, and equipping them
with tools that would meet their needs and address their challenges.

To Foster Climate Resilience

Build and establish an infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather
events which will positively enhance long-term resilience and sustainability for both urban and
rural environments so they are better positioned to take on climate-related challenges.

To Reduce Maintenance Needs.

To be developed and implemented low maintenance system which is bound to reduce the burden,
both on local governments, as well as on the teams associated with infrastructure. This is believed
to be long-term-efficient and sustainable for resource utilization and service management.

To build Community Participation and Awareness.

It is crucial to generate and promote active cooperation and collaboration with all the involved
communities and stakeholders so as to bring the people towards responsible waste disposal. This
way, the collective ownership and feeling of responsibility toward flood management will be built
up thereby increasing community participation and awareness.

Preparations for the Gallery Walk

The journey to develop Swift Stream, an innovative underground drainage system, began
with a clear objective: to create a scalable, efficient, and sustainable solution to the recurring issue
of flooding in flood-prone areas. We explored the limitation of existing drainage systems - debris
accumulation, clogging, and low performances during heavy rainfalls through interview to some
people from flood-prone areas. The brainstorming for such a design is for something resilient,
efficient, and low on maintenance, designed to withstand the unique challenges of areas prone to
flooding.
After refining the concept, design stage was initiated through Tinkercad a computer-
aided design software that made accurate blueprints of the final product, we started to gather
materials for prototyping like plywoods, arduino, wires, etc. We also decided to make a high
fidelity prototype to show the function and the structure of our project. After gathering the
materials we started making the prototype, and many challenges we encountered like the
materials needed and how to make our prototype function because we are lacking of knowledge
about the mechanics of the materials we need but at the end we made a successful prototype.

Then we prepare for the gallery walk by making a pitch and a flyers for the raters. And
when the gallery walk starts we deliver our pitch successfully and answered all the questions
from the raters effectively. We also received some suggestions that will help us to improve the
Swift stream more effectively in the future.

Questions Asked During Gallery Walk

During the gallery walk, several important questions were raised by the raters, which allowed us
to delve deeper into the technicalities of Swift Stream. Some questions and our answers were as
folows:

1. How does this project works?

- this project is an underground drainage system that will help us especially those
people from flood-prone areas. The water flows through the screen and the trash
were separated when the door opens and those trashes will be delivered in the
garbage bin.

2. What is the purpose of your project

- the purpose of this project is to address the problem of our country which is the
flood and to maintain public safety.

3. How will you know when the Garbage bin was full?

- We will know it if were going to the underground passage through the garbage
bin.

Suggestions from the Raters

The feedback from the raters provided valuable insights into improving the Swift Stream project.
Some of the key suggestions included:

 The net or the filter should be flexible: This suggestions enable us to understand that
using flexible filter will avoid damage the nest if ever the garbage bin was full or heavy.

 Attach Sensor to the Garbage bin: To easily detect if the garbage bin was full or heavy.

 Automatic Trash Transfer: It suggests the if the garbage bin was full it will
automatically transfer outside.
Learning from the Gallery Walk

In the gallery walk, very important questions were raised to go deep into the technicalities
of the Swift Stream project. Among them was, "How does this project work? " We responded by
saying that Swift Stream is an underground drainage system, especially for flood-prone areas,
where water flows through a screen that separates trash.

Another relevant question was about the purpose of the project. We presented the fact that
Swift Stream aims at solving this case of mass flooding that is common in many places by ensuring
public security using a safe and efficient yet sustainable drainage solution that minimizes cases of
flooding and subsequent damage. This purpose reflected importance well with the raters, who
understood how huge an impact it can make in vulnerable communities.

It also asked how we would validate that the garbage bin is full. We check it through hand
by going down into the underground passageway to access the bin. It solicited several useful
suggestions toward perfecting improvement on the system. A net or filter that could stretch
flexibly, so that in case it is not appropriate for its weight or volume without damaging the system,
suggested another individual. The raters also recommended including a sensor that will identify
when the garbage bin is full or heavy. This way, the monitoring process would be automated, and
one would not have to rely on manual checks. Some also proposed an automatic trash transfer
system that would move the waste outside when the bin is full, which would make the maintenance
process much more streamlined.
