In-Class Group Activity: 5% of Total Grade

Job Interview for HR Coordinator at goeasy

Due Date: Mar 22
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to learn and practice how to improve interview skills and better prepare for job interviews.
Usually, interview questions are a combination of a review of your experience, behavioural and situational questions to help
hiring managers have a better understanding of a candidates’ qualifications, background and suitability for the positions hiring
for. It should also give a proper opportunity for the job applicants to demonstrate their qualifications through the relevant
questions. You will be graded on the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of your responses. If you use bullet points to respond to
the written questions, please make sure they represent a complete thought.

Instructions:
In this activity, you and your group members have the role of both job interviewer and job interviewee. The vacant job position
of HR Coordinator (18-month contract) at Canadian financial lender, goeasy.

Here is the link to the job posting: https://ca.indeed.com/cmp/Goeasy/jobs. Read carefully the required skills, qualifications,
experience and other consideration for this position.

First Part: Job Interviewee

In the first part of the activity, you all must draft your responses to the questions below following the recommended format.

• “Tell me about yourself.”

This is your Introductory Positioning Statement. This is also an opportunity to build rapport and give the interviewer a frame of
reference. Focus on what you know this employer needs and select the most relevant material you have. Be sure this is concise
(no more than two minutes). Another thing to note: tie this to your personal brand or to the value you bring and use present
tense (I am, I do, etc.). Avoid giving just a chronology of the jobs you’ve held in the past.

• “Why should we hire you?”

Emphasize your unique qualities and value proposition and relate them to the position whenever possible. Be prepared to back
them up with accomplishments and situations where you have utilized these skills. This is where your research comes into play
(Google, company website, Glassdoor, and/or OneSource) so you can speak knowledgably about the organization.

• Accomplishment Stories: (SOAR/STAR)

An excellent guide for developing accomplishment stories that showcase your skills is called SOAR or STAR
(Situation Obstacles/Task Actions Results.) Your SOAR stories put your accomplishments in a business context that an employer
can understand. And the SOAR acronym is easy to remember and will help you organize material in interview situations.

Situation - Describe the Situation.

Obstacles/Task - Describe the Obstacles or Task you faced.
Actions - List the Actions you took.
Results - Describe the results you helped obtain and the benefits to your employer.

The SOAR/STAR approach works because it will give you high-value bullet points for your resume and prepare you for the
interview by taking generic job criteria and turning it into a story worth telling.

Select ONE of these questions below and draft your response following the SOAR formula:
1. “Tell me about a time you had several challenging tasks all due on the same day? How did you go about it? How did it turn
out?”
2. “Tell me about a time you took the initiative of solving a problem that others had been ignoring? What did you do? How
did it work out?”

Second Part: Job Interviewer:

In this section, you and your group members have the role of job interviewer. Each of you should read/present the response to
the group. You as the job interviewer, must attentively listen to the responses, make notes, assess the responses and rank the
interviewees based on their responses.
You must decide based on their responses, which candidate is more suitable for the position of HR Coordinator and explain
WHY.

Job Interview for HR Coordinator at goeasy
Due Date: Mar 22
Guideline and Format:

Please follow the following format to complete the exercise. You will be graded on the thoroughness of answering each question
(i.e. did you actually answer the question?). Please write in full sentences with proper grammar.

Section One: Interview Questions’ Responses: (please follow the recommendations and formula to draft your responses)

a) Your response to tell me about yourself and why should we hire you.
After I read the job description for the HR coordinator role, I was assured that I am a great fit for this role. As a reliable person
who has great communication skills, I will make sure that all the confidential information is kept safe, and I will absolutely
maintain positive employee relations. My previous experience with the preparation of different documents and my ability to
adapt quickly to change and to pick things up quick will make me a great addition to your team.

b) Your response to one of the SOAR responses.

One time I had several challenging tasks all due on one day was when one of my co-workers had some family problems and had
to miss works so I had to cover for her. It was challenging because I was not very familiar with what she was doing, so I had to
constantly ask for information from her. I kept track of all the work I did, and I consulted it with her so that I could make sure I
had done everything right. By asking feedback from her I managed to get everything done on time.

Section Two: Evaluating the Job Interviewees:

a) Who is your top choice for this position and why? Provide 3 reasons.

I decided to hire Jasmeet because she had the background and experience required for this role. She has experience in payroll
administration, employee relations, and HR support, indicating a strong background in HR functions.
She is someone who takes initiative to solve problems and managed to do so successfully in her previous roles.
She also appreciates working in fast-paced settings which is crucial for this role, and she was able to convey her experience
effectively.

b) Why were other candidates were not selected? Provide 3 reasons.

The other candidates did not have the right experience and qualifications required for this role. Recent graduates need to gain
experience in entry positions first so that later they can manage payrolls and HR systems.
I also believe that they need to work more on their problem-solving skills for them to manage this type of work environment.
While they have provided examples of challenging situations, they have not demonstrated problem-solving abilities like Jasmeet
did.
The other candidates also need to demonstrate a commitment to the fast-paced working environment and establishing a good
working environment.

c) What feedback would you give them to improve their interview skills based on their interview? Share 2 tips based on
their performance (be specific).
I would suggest the other candidates to provide more concrete examples that are related to the role when they are discussing
their experiences and achievements so that the interviewer can understand their skills related to the role.
The fact the recent graduate does not have experience would not have excluded this candidate from being selected if she had
emphasized her willingness to learn and adapt to new environments.

Section Three: Takeaways and Reflection

a) What were 3 challenges in the interview process for you?
As the interviewer it was challenging to determine each candidate’s fit for the role based on their responses.
It was hard to determine which candidate to pick based on their skills because while they had some required skills, they lacked
the others making it hard to compare them objectively.
It was hard to manage three Interviews at one time and to give each candidate enough time to showcase their qualifications
and suitability for the role.

b) What were 3 challenges in the interview process for your candidates?

The candidates found it hard to effectively convey my experiences and achievements during the interview.
They struggled to provide relevant examples for this position, maybe due to a lack of relevant experiences or difficulties in
recalling specific instances from their past.
They were not very confident during the interview.

c) What are you main 3 takeaways from this activity?

From this activity I learned that it is Important to prepare beforehand whether you are the interview or the candidate.
Candidates should identify what the company is looking for and showcase their capabilities suitable for that role. Interviewers
should also provide relevant questions to the candidates.
Being able to effectively communicate the skills, experiences and achievements is crucial for the candidates.
Asking the candidate to provide examples of past experiences provides good insights into their abilities and problem-solving
skills and fit for the role.
