Understand the concept of
information literacy.
Literacy
- is the ability to identify, understand,
interpret, create, communicate and
compute, using printed and written
materials associated with varying
contexts.
Information Literacy
- the ability to recognize when
information is needed, and to locate,
evaluate, and effectively communicate
information in its various formats.
Information Literacy
- it is a set of individual competencies
needed to identify, evaluate and use
information in the most ethical, efficient
and effective way across all domains,
occupations and professions.

Sources of
Information
Information Sources
• Primary Source – is an original
object/ document – the raw material
of first-hand information, source
material that is closest to what is
being studied.
Information Sources
• Primary Source – may include
historical and legal documents, eye
witness accounts, results of an
experiment, statistical data, creative
writing, art objects, etc.
Information Sources
• Secondary Source – is something
written about a primary source.
Information Sources
• Secondary Source – may include,
comments/ discussions about the original
material, articles in newspaper and
magazines, reviews of books and movies,
articles in scholarly journals that evaluate
someone else’s original research.
Information Sources
Think of secondary sources as
second-hand information. If I tell you
something, I am the primary source. If
you tell someone else what I told you,
you are the secondary source.

There are times that Primary
Sources can also be Secondary Sources.
Information Sources
• Tertiary Sources – these are sources
that index, abstract, organize,
compile, or digest other sources.
These are usually not credited to a
particular author.
Information Sources
• Tertiary Sources – may include
dictionaries, almanacs, fact books,
Wikipedia, handbooks, directories,
etc.
