Reading Snapshot: Unlocking unfamiliar words

1. Introduction

 Purpose: The purpose of unlocking unfamiliar words is to enhance


reading comprehension, build vocabulary, and develop critical thinking
skills.
 Definition: Unlocking unfamiliar words in reading refers to the process of
figuring out the meaning of new or unknown words while reading a text.
This skill is crucial for improving comprehension and vocabulary.
 Why It’s Important: Teaching specific words before reading helps both
vocabulary learning and reading comprehension. Before students read a
text, it is helpful to teach them specific words they will see in the text.
Teaching this can help students both learn new words and comprehend
the text.

2. Background of the Unlocking unfamiliar words

 Different Purposes:
o To enhance reading comprehension
o To build a stronger vocabulary
o To Facilitate effective communication
 Clues to Look For:
o Context Clues: These clues appear in the same sentence or nearby
sentences.
o Word Analysis (Morphological Clues): This strategy involves
breaking the word into parts to unlock its meaning.
o Visual or Structural Clues: Compound words contain hints from their
individual parts.

3. Comprehension Questions

1. Context-Based Questions:
o (These questions prompt readers to use the surrounding text to
infer the meaning of unfamiliar words.)
2. Word Analysis Questions:
o (These questions ask readers to break down the unfamiliar word
into meaningful parts.)
3. Inference and Prediction Questions:
o (These questions encourage readers to make logical guesses about
the word’s meaning.)
4. Verification and Reflection Questions:
o (These questions ask readers to confirm and reflect on their
understanding of the word.)
5. Application Questions:
