Grade 8 Mechanical Systems

Unit Project: Rube Goldberg Machine

Your mission, and you will accept it, is to build a Rube Goldberg machine. This is a team
event so in addition to choosing how to build your device, what materials to use, you must
also carefully select your partner. As you will see in the marking rubric individual marks
will be assigned for work observed, but you and your partner are both responsible for the
final product.

Rube Goldberg Machine: A Rube Goldberg machine or device is a deliberately

over-engineered machine that performs a very simple task in a very complex
fashion, usually including a chain reaction.

Note: This type of machine is named after Reuben Lucius Goldberg (July 4, 1883 –
December 7, 1970) who was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and
inventor.

Build a machine that can accomplish one or more of the following tasks as the end result:
turn on a light, break an egg, make a bell ring, pop a balloon, or fill a glass of water. The
size of your machine is only limited by your imagination and your ability to get it from your
home to the school, in other words it needs to be portable so don’t make it too big.

Possible Materials: The following list of materials may be used to build your device; you
are really only limited by your imagination and the weight of your device, since it must be
portable. If in doubt, please ask. Do not use flammable or combustible material or
anything else that may cause you or your classmates harm.

-marbles golf balls ping pong balls

-toilet paper Paper towel rolls plastic containers
-pins, nails, tacks elastic bands mousetrap
- wheels popsicle sticks tape
- glue,(white, hot glue) string, yarn cardboard
-paper wire wooden blocks
-hot wheels cars Lego dominoes
-wood cards etc…
-imagination hot wheels tracks
Criteria for Success: Goldberg Machine

a. Machine must accomplish the stated final task (2 times in a row - time to reset
will be provide)
b. Machine must include at least 4 simple machines in the design, you may have more
than 4 if you wish, but if you use a ramp three times that only counts as one
simple machine but may be counted as 3 steps.
c. Machine must have at least 8 steps before the final step, the
starting point is considered a step. You may have more than 8 steps if you wish.
d. Completed blueprint diagram;
- drawn in pencil
- neatly drawn and well organized
- labeled simple machines in device
- covers most of a blank 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper
- has the name of all group members
- has all used materials listed on the back of the diagram.

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

*This mark will be based on your preparedness to work in class, bringing all necessary materials to class on
those days that are designated as being class work days and your ability to accept and work on those parts of
your project that may involve redoing/fixing and tweaking work that has already been completed.
**This mark will be determined in part by your teammate(s) and what I observe in the class as you progress
with your project work.
