Driver’s License

A driver’s license is a legal document used as proof of identity, age, and address. It can be used
at places like banks or hospitals. In Tamil Nadu, licenses are issued based on the type of
vehicle: non-transport (for personal vehicles) and transport (for commercial vehicles).

Types of Licenses:

1. Non-Transport Vehicles (for personal use):

● Motorcycles with gear: For bikes with gear.

● Motorcycles without gear: For gearless vehicles like scooters.

● Light Motor Vehicles: For cars and bikes for personal use.

2. Transport Vehicles (for commercial use):

● Light Motor Vehicles: Includes taxis, auto-rickshaws, and delivery vans.

● Heavy Motor Vehicles: Includes trucks, buses, etc.

Documents Required for a License in Tamil Nadu:

● Filled application form (Form 4).

● Proof of address and age.

● Citizenship declaration.

● Original learner's license.

● Passport-size photos.

● Valid vehicle documents.

Steps to Obtain a License:

1. Apply online through the Tamil Nadu Government Transport Portal or visit the RTO.
2. Submit Form 4 along with necessary documents (age proof, address proof, medical certificate
if above 50 years).

3. After verification, the driving license will be issued.

Checking License Status:

You can check your license status online on the Tamil Nadu government website by entering
your details (license number, name, etc.) or visit the RTO.

Getting a Duplicate License:

If your license is lost or stolen, apply for a duplicate within 6 months at the RTO where it was
issued. You need to submit documents like a copy of the FIR, application form LLD,
age/address proof, and pay the required fees.

Documents for Duplicate License:

● FIR copy (if stolen).

● Application form LLD.

● Proof of age and address.

● Challan clearance (for commercial licenses).

● Affidavit explaining why you need a duplicate license.

Renewing Your License:

You can renew your license either online or offline by filling out Form 9, submitting documents,
and paying the fees. After verification, your license will be renewed.

Documents for License Renewal:

● Renewal application form (Form 9).

● Current license.

● Fitness declaration form (Form 1).


● Medical certificate (Form 1-A) if applicable.

● Passport-sized photos.

● Application fee.

Driving License Test:

To get a license, you must pass a driving test in front of a Motor Vehicle Inspector to prove your
driving skills.

This gives you a clearer and simpler understanding of the driver’s license process in Tamil
Nadu.
