At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

1. Determine what is science education and its significance in the
development of 21st century learners
2. Describe the learning environment in science education between
basic education and tertiary education and;
3. Distinguish the different science school education in the
Philippines

What is Science Education?

 It is the field concerned with sharing science content and processes with individuals
not traditionally considered part of the scientific community. Science Education
deals on teaching, learning, and understanding science.

Teaching Science
 involves developing ways on how to effectively teach science. This means exploring
pedagogical theories and models im helping teachers in teaching scientific concepts
and process effectively.

Learning Science
 this involves both pedagogy and the most interesting aspect is how it helps
students to feel fun and understand science thoroughly.

Understanding Science
 implies developing and applying science-process skills and using science literacy in
understanding the natural and world and activities in everyday life.

John Dewey (2001)

 a proponent of making learning experiences centered around student interests and
developing socially responsible citizens He stressed the importance of utilizing the
natural environment to teach students. Accordingly, nature must indeed furnish its
physical stimuli to provide wealth of meaning through social activities and thinking.
It is not surprising therefore that science education is important.

Significance of Science Education in developing

 Science education can offer a rich context for developing many 21st-century skills,
such as critical thinking, problem solving, and information literacy especially when
instruction addresses the nature of science and promotes use of science practices.

What is the main purpose of science education?

 Science education gives students the opportunity to gain a better knowledge of how
and why things function. Science can teach children about the world that surrounds
them. Everything from human anatomy to techniques of transportation, science can
reveal the mechanisms and the reasons for complicated systems.

Science Education in Basic and Tertiary Education

Basic Education
 Science education helps students learn important concepts and facts that are
related to everyday life including important skills
 This includes process skills, critical thinking skills, and life skills that are needed in
coping up with daily life activities (Chaille & Britain, 2002).
 It also develops positive attitude such as: love for knowledge, passion for
innovative things, curiosity to study about nature and creativity.

Tertiary Education
 Deals with developing students’ understanding and appreciation of science ideas
and scientific works.
 This is done through offering basic science courses in the General Education
curriculum.
 General Education curriculum is a set of courses that represent a body of
knowledge and set of skills that faculty desire students to know and do in
preparation for disciplinary study.
 Science education in this level focuses on the preparation of science teachers,
scientists, engineers and other professionals in various science-related fields such
as engineering, agriculture, medicine and health sciences.
 The state also provides scholarships to encourage more students to pursue science
courses.

Science Schools in the Philippines

There are also several government programs implemented by the Department of
Education and few private schools for science education.
1. Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS)
2. Special Science Elementary Schools (SSES) Project
3. Quezon City Regional Science High School 4. Manila Science High School
5. Central Visayan Institute Foundation

1. Philippine Science High School System (PSHSS)

 a government program for gifted students in the Philippines
 a service institute of the Department of Science and Technology whose mandate is
to offer free scholarship basis for secondary course with special emphasis on
subjects pertaining to the science, with the end view of preparing a students for
science career (Republic No.3661)

 The aim of the PSHS Curriculum is to nurture scholars to become holistic

individuals who are humanistic in spirit, global in perspective, patriotic in orientation,
and well-prepared to pursue a STEM career which will contribute to nation-building.

2. Special Science Elementary Schools (SSES) Project

 It started in June 2007 with 57 identified elementary schools or as science
elementary schools in the country, until today it grow more than 60 schools
nationwide.
 It research and development project designed to develop students with higher
aptitude for science and mathematics through the implementation of an enhanced
science and mathematics curriculum at the elementary level.
 It aims to develop filipino children equipped with scientific and technological
knowledge, skills and values.
 It has the mission to:
a.) provide a learning environment to scientific inclined children through a special
curriculum that recognizes the multiple intelligence of the learners;
b.) promote the development of lifelong learning skills and;
c.) foster the holistic development of the learners.

3. Quezon City Regional Science High School

 It was established on September 17, 1967.
 Originally it was named Quezon City Science School and turned into a regional
science high school for the National Capital Region in 1999.
 The school established for special science school for talented students or science-
gifted students in science and mathematics develop spirit of inquiry and creativity.
 It is the premier science high school of Quezon City, and is regarded as one of the
prestigious sciences triumvirate of the Republic of the Philippines along with the
Philippine Science High School and Manila Science High School.

4. Manila Science High School

 The school was established on October 1, 1963
 The Manila Science High School (MSHS or MaSci for brevity) is the pilot science
high school of the country.
 Patterned after the Bronx Science High School in New York, USA, MSHS was
founded in 1963 with the graduation of the first Special Science Class spearheaded
by Principal Augusto Alzona, regarded as the "Father of Manila Science High
School."
 The curriculum of the school puts more emphasis on science and mathematics,
humanities courses and other electives are included in their curriculum; and they
also encourage to participate in various extra curricular activities.
 MSHS aims to produce scientist with soul, producing outstanding alumni and for
winning various national competition.

5. Central Visayan Institute Foundation

 It is said to be home and pioneer of the prominent school based innovation known
as Dynamic Learning Program (DLP)
 Dynamic Learning Program (DLP) is a flexible and student-centered approach
that emphasizes active participation and learning by doing.
 Constructivist Learning Theory supports the belief that students construct their
own knowledge through active engagement and meaning-making.
 The school text pride in its Research Center for Theoretical Physics (RCTP)
established in 1992, which organizes small intentional workshops to foster the
informal but intensive change of ideas and perspectives on outstanding problem in
physics and mathematics.
