TRANSPORT

INTRODUCTION
Since the early 1990s, the exchange of
products and information has continued to
grow, as have the means of transporting
them. Transport is undoubtedly the best way
to move from one place to another. What
does it consist of? In order to learn more
about this activity, we will study its creation,
its components and its impact on the world.

1
TRANSPORT

I. TRANSPORT CREATION

Transport has been around for hundreds of

years, using human or animal power. But the
development of the steam engine in the
18th century was the beginning of a
revolution in transport. At the beginning of
the 19th century, the industrial revolution
began, the locomotive appeared and the
railway developed. This was followed by the
gradual emergence of the automobile.
During the 20th century, we have seen the
development of air traffic in terms of
regions. Then man invented and developed
space transport, sending robots, satellites
and human beings called astronauts.

II. TYPES OF TRANSPORT

There are, in fact, many types of transport.

In logistics, there are four main types: road,
sea, rail and air. Depending on the
company's sector of activity, it may be more

TRANSPORT

strategic to adopt one means of transport

rather than another.

a. Road transport

It is ideal for both short and long distances.

It is suitable for temperature-controlled
products such as pharmaceuticals or
perishable goods.

b. Sea transport

Sea transport is the movement of goods,

passengers and marina activities by sea.
The means of transport are essentially
provided by the merchant navy. It is the
most important mode of transport for the
movement of goods.

c.Rail transport

3
TRANSPORT

Railway transport is a guided mode of

transport characterised by a special
infrastructure consisting of two parallel rails
that allow the circulation of trains, trams,
tram-trains and metros. It allows large
quantities of goods to be transported over
long distances and is environmentally
friendly due to its low CO2 emissions.

d. Air transport

Air transport refers to the activity of

transporting passengers or goods by air, as
well as the sector of the economy that
includes the main or ancillary activities
related to this mode of transport. It is a very
reliable option in cases where time is of the
essence, such as stock shortages,
replacement goods, spare parts or low
volume/weight. In these cases, it is
preferable to maritime groupage, which is
generally cheaper if the volume is less than

1 m3 or if the goods do not occupy the

entire container.

III. THE ADVANTAGES AND

DISADVANTAGES OF TRANSPORT

a. Advantages

Transport allows us to go further (compared

to walking, which is the natural means of
locomotion), to go faster, to access
otherwise inaccessible spaces (sea, sky,
space...).
It is also involved in globalisation as far as
commercial exchanges are concerned, as
well as discovering other cultures
(leisure/tourism, opening up to the world).
tourism, opening up to the world).

b. Disadvantages

Despite these many advantages, transport

also has its drawbacks, which can be

5
TRANSPORT

harmful to people and the environment.

These include pollution (air or water),
accidents (human or animal), fines,
breakdowns, congestion, noise,
inconvenience (bad smells, cramped
conditions, delays) and costs. It also requires
infrastructure (roads, railways, ports, etc.)
which is a public expenditure.

CONCLUSION

Since its inception, transport has

continuously improved the conditions of
human communication around the world. It
is present in all sectors of activity and is a
key player in globalisation. Unfortunately,
transport causes as much damage to the
environment as it does good.
Despite these drawbacks, transport is
indispensable to humanity because of its
usefulness in everyday life.
