IEE 11: BUSINESS PROCESS SIMULATION
Max. Marks: 140
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q.1. a) Explain the method of simulation used in solving the problems in business
(10)
context and list important areas of its applications. Bring out the advantages
and disadvantages of the simulation method as compared analytical method.
b) Explain Monte Carlo method of simulation. How would you use method of
simulation to (i) Exact probability distribution (ii) Empirical probability (10)
distribution?

Q.2. Colourchem Private Limited manufactures 25 ton of a highly perishable (20)

chemical product per day but it (perishes) turn useless unless used on the
same day. The demand for the chemical varies from one day to another for
various reasons. The demand distribution is given in the following Table

Daily Sale 22 23 24 25 26 27 28

Probability 0.05 0.10 0.20 0.30 0.16 0.14 0.05

The production cost and selling price of each ton is Rs. 35,000/- and Rs. 60,000/-
respectively. Any unsold ton of product is disposed off at a loss of Rs.5,000/- per ton.
There is penalty of not meeting Rs.2,000/- per ton for not meeting the demand.
Determine the total profit or loss based on simulation run for 10 days using the
following random numbers: Random numbers: 14, 23, 05, 91, 87, 59, 37, 49, 63, 75.

Q.3. a) Explain the meaning of the random numbers and differentiate true random numbers
(08)
from the pseudo random numbers.
b) Explain and illustrate any two methods of generating random numbers and
(12)
generate at least five numbers using each of these methods.

Q.4. a) Explain the role of computers in simulation with special emphasis on general
(10)
purpose programming languages and special purpose programming
languages.
b) What do you mean by probability distribution? Provide important
(10)
characteristics of normal and exponential distributions.

Q.5. a) Explain the following test (10)

(i) Serial test
(ii) Gap test
b) Explain the importance of validation of simulation models and methods of
validation. Explain Turin test for input- output validation. (10)
Q.6. A firm has a single service station with following arrival and service time probability
(20)
distributions:

Inter-arrival time Probability Service time Probability

(minutes) (minutes)

10 0.10 5 0.08

15 0.25 10 0.14

20 0.30 15 0.18

25 0.25 20 0.24

30 0.10 25 0.22

30 0.14

The customer arrival at the service station is a random phenomenon and the time between arrivals varies from
10 minutes to 30 minutes. The service time varies from 05 minutes to 30 minutes. The queuing process begins
at 9 AM and proceeds for nearly 8 hours. An arrival goes to the service facility immediately, if it is free.
Otherwise, it has to wait in a queue. Determine the (i) Average queue length (ii) Average waiting time of a
customer before service (iii) Average service time based on simulation study using the following random
numbers.
Random numbers for inter-arrival time: 20, 73, 30, 99, 66, 83, 32, 75, 04, 15
Random numbers for service time: 26, 43, 98, 87, 58, 90, 84, 60, 08, 50

Q.7. A company trading in motor vehicle spares wishes to determine the level of stock it
(20)
should maintain for the item in its range. Demand is variable and there is fixed lead
time for the replenishment of stock. For one item -roller bearing, the following
information is available.

Demand (Units /day) 10 11 12 13 14

Probability 0.1 0.2 0.3 0.3 0.1

Lead time for replenishment = 2 days

Ordering cost per order = Rs.500
Inventory carrying cost per unit per day = Rs.2
Stock in hand at the beginning of this simulation exercise is 25 units. You are required
to carry out simulation run over a period of 10 days with the objective of evaluating the
rule: Order 20 units when present inventory plus outstanding order falls below 20
units.
The sequence of random numbers to be used in simulation is
25, 37, 65,76, 12, 05,71,83, 19, 44. Your calculation should include the total cost of
operating this inventory rule for 10 days.
