Form factor and crest factor

Function C F
Form factors and crest factors
indicate the relationship between the
various averages. They apply in each
case to a specific waveform.

Form factor:

The form factors for various

waveforms are critical for meters that
primarily measure the DC component
(e.g. moving coil galvanometers with
rectifiers). In order to display the root
mean square value on the scale of a
moving coil galvanometer with
rectifier, the form factor needs to be
be incorporated into the division of
the scale. For sinusoidal values
(either half-wave) the form factor F =
1.11 and the scale is divided on
this basis. This implies that for any
other waveform the display will be
incorrect since their form factors will be different.

Crest factor:

The crest factor is important when evaluating values that take the form of a pulse. When
making measurements using electronic instruments that employ authentic rms measuring
principles, a maximum for the crest factor is specified in order to prevent overloading (thus
causing errors in the measurement results).

The table includes some important crest and form factors. For the square wave the value τ
represents the switch-on time.
