How to Form a Sentence

A sent ence has four (4 ) part s:


1. A capt ial let t er
2.A subject
3.A verb
4 .Punct uat ion
Independent Clauses
A sent ence is also known as
an independent clause because
it cont ains one or more
complet e t hought s or ideas.

For example:
I like t o visit wit h my friends.
Dependent Clauses
A dependent clause is not a
sent ence because it does not
cont ain a full t hought . It is
used t o support a main idea.

For example:
When I t hink about my life...
Types of Sent ences
There are three (3) main
t ypes of sent ences.

1. Simple sent ences


2.Compound sent ences
3.Complex sent ences
Simple Sentences
Simple sent ences cont ain only one
main t hought or idea.

For example:
I enjoy playing t able t ennis wit h my
friend.
Simple Questions
Simple quest ions ask about only
one main act ion, idea, or t hought .

For example:
Did you enjoy t he movie last night ?
Compound Sentences
Compound sent ences cont ain t wo
independent clauses joined t oget her
wit h a co- ordinat ing conjunct ion
(FANBOYS).
For example:
Our car broke down, so we t ook a t axi
home.
Compound Questions
Compound quest ions cont ain t wo
independent clauses joined t oget her
wit h a co- ordinat ing conjunct ion.

For example:
Would you rat her eat a sandwich, or
go t o get groceries?
Co- ordinat ing Conjunct ions
A list of co- ordinat ing conjunct ions
include:
F = for
A = and
N = nor
B = but
O = or
Y = yet
S = so
Complex Sentences
Complex sent ences cont ain one
independent clause and one
dependent clause joined t oget her
wit h a subordinat ing conjunct ion.
For example:
We were lat e t o t he part y because
we couldn’t get a t axi!
Complex Questions
Complex quest ions cont ain one
independent clause and one
dependent clause joined t oget her
wit h a subordinat ing conjunct ion.
For example:
If you had a day off, what would you
do t o relax?
Subordinating Conjunctions
A list of common subordinat ing
conjunct ions include:

aft er, alt hough, as, as if, as long as,


because, before, despit e, even if, even
t hough, if, in order t hat , rat her t han,
since, so t hat , t hat , t hough, unless, unt il,
when, where, whereas, whet her, and
while.
