1. Introduction
I graduated with a bachelor of Engineering Degree in Civil (B.E Civil) at
West Yangon Technological University (Hlaing Thar Yar) in 2010.
After I had completed my Degree, I started working at ACE Co, Ltd. situated
in Nay Pyi Taw as a site engineer for about 6 months. Afterwards, in 2011, I attended
the Master Degree Programme at the Yangon Technological University. After two
years study, I successfully achieved Master Degree specialized in structural
engineering with the thesis titled in “Study on Influence of Lateral Loading on Beam
Design in 14-Storeyd R.C Building”. From 2013 to up till now, I have been working
at Toe & Associates Structural Design Company as a structural design engineer.

My academic qualifications, working knowledge etc. concerning for structural

engineering are as follows.

1. Calculating of the Number of Bole Holes

According to CQHP Guideline

Up to 10,000 ft² Area - One bore hole for 2,500 ft² area (minimum)
≥ Two bore holes

More than 10,000 ft² Area - One bore hole for 2,500 ft² (up to 10,000 ft²)
+
One bore hole for 5,000 ft² (additional bore hole)

For Project area = 23933.77 ft²

Required Number of Bore Hole = 7 Nos
Therefore, = 9 bore hole is adequate.

Calculating of the Depth of Bore Hole

[1] Shallow Foundations

Z = 1.5 x lesser dimension of project area ≥ 30 ft

[2] Deep Foundations

Z = 15 x S0.7 (ft)

S = Number of stories including basement

For this project, 2 BASEMENT + 12-1/2 STOREYED R.C.C BUILDING

Z = 15 x S0.7
= 113 ft

The Bore Hole depth is 130 ft deep from Soil Report.

SECTION -3
3.1-Core Engineering Competencies
3.1.1-Apply Engineering Knowledge, Methods and Techniques
To achieve or the safe and cost effective structurally designed building, many
different knowledge, methods and techniques with are related to each other’s,
must be applied. Especially, cleverness of Architects, the knowledge of other
professionals, such as Structural Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Mechanical
Engineers, Electronics Engineers, Water & Sanitation engineers, Landscape
Specialists, Geologists, Seismologists and Builders should be properly combined.

3.1.2- Use of engineering technology, tools and equipment

Although engineering technologies are developing, the basic understanding of
load and weights are very important part of structural design work. Effect of
own weight or dead loads, live loads, wind load, seismic load, temperature load
and others must be understood to apply them on our structure in analysis. We can
consult many references from Codes, ASCE, IBC, ACI, AISC, MNBC and others.
Selection and manipulation of method of structural analysis are critical part of
structural design. It can be by approximate methods, coefficient methods, moment
distribution methods and advance analysis methods. For saving our time and
brain, we can use many types of computer aided structural analysis software.
We use some software for 3D Model analysis such as Multi Frame, STAAD
Pro., SAP 2000, ETABS, SAFE, PROKON and TEKLA. But, all of structural
analysis software output results are subject to judgment of user dependent
engineering knowledge. For drafting, computer aided tools such as AutoCAD is a
useful software.

3.1.3- Safeguard public safety

The first priority of structural design work is safety for human beings
and properties. All design codes, standards and regulations contain safety
provision. We used the ACI 318-99 or 318-05 for reinforce concrete design and
AISC-LRFD or AISC-ASD for structural steel design, UBC 97 for gravity
seismic loads, ASCE 7-02 or 05 for wind load. Codes, Standards and Regulations
should be up to date and must be followed to ensure public safety.

3.1.4-Recognize the impacts of engineering on the environment, economy and Society

In consistent with current construction practices, we must decide use of
Materials and structural system. Mostly used are timber, concrete, steel and
composite. Every single use of structural materials have to be conformed to
mechanics of materials, how to react internal or external stresses in our materials.
On the other hand, all materials used for building structure should be economical
without destroying environment. We must try to get a balance between development
and environmental conservation.

48
3.1.5- Manage engineering activities
After analysis of structure, another critical parts come out, that is
design For all of structural components. It will be design of Slabs, Staircases,
Beams, Columns, Wall or Shear wall, many type of Foundation and Retaining
structure. That can be managed by using our own excel spread sheets or others.
Drafting Follows the design stage. Site visits for proper implementation of specified
design instructions are done during construction. Necessary changes are inevitable
for design professionals. Every stage must be properly managed to achieve success.

3.1.6-Communicate engineering information

For successful implementation of structural design, we have to collaborate
or interact with Client, Architect and other Engineers. After setting out project
objectives, functional requirements and limitations, we have to proceed pre -
engineering works, such as site inspection, surveying and soil testing. At that time,
we can classify the building structural category or occupancy whether essential
or hazardous facilities and normal facilities. Every engineering subjects, have to
follow codes, standards and regulations, (UBS 97 section 1636 is useful for site
categorization). Collaboration and exchange of information in design and
construction stages are essential in a project.

3.1.7- Work collaboratively

Location of structural components are very important in structure framing
layout. Sometime, architectural needs may be in conflict with structural requirements
such as wall or shear wall column, opening and clear floor height. For the best
solution we must collaborate with Architects and other related Engineers in the
implementation of project.

3.1.8- Maintain and enhance engineering skills and knowledge

When all of the structural component design is completed, the structural
details and drafting are processed issue to conceptual and design drawings for
Architects and M&E Engineers, for permissions, for tender and fully construction
drawings.
To be consistent with current construction practices, we have to keep
and improve our skill and knowledge with updated Building and Design codes,
standards, regulations, structural analysis software, practices of other specialists,
Engineers and engineering information.
Above illustrative factors will be hopefully supporting tools for the Safe Cost
Effective Structurally designed Buildings and the Registered Senior
Engineer (R.S.E) Structure.

3.2 Conclusion
In conclusion, I have been working as a structural design engineer at
Toe & Associates Structural Design Company for almost 6 years. In this period,
I have the experience of designing the low-rise building and high-rise building.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for using your time to
consider my application for the recognition of Register Senior Engineer(Structure). To
become a qualified structural engineer is an aim for me and I am going to raise my
engineering knowledge and skills day by day. Also, I will continue to work as a
structural engineer serving as public safety and knowledge sharing for our juniors to
the right way.
