CRITERIA 9: STUDENT SUPPORT SYSTEM

9.1 Mentoring system to help at individual level (5 Marks):


Details of Student Mentoring System

 An effective Student Mentoring System is in practiced in the college. Students of all


departments are brought under this system from the date of joining the college.
 To monitor their progress faculty members are designated as Student Mentors and
they are given Mentoring Registers for the same.
 Each Mentor is allotted with 20- 25 students under the mentoring system.
 Student activities like Academic, Curricular, Co-curricular, Extra Curricular
achievements, Social activities and the details of Parent Meetings are registered in the
Student Mentoring System.
 Student Mentors (Faculty members) assess students continuously and their Academic
progress and all their activities are discussed and noted in the register.
 Any discrepancies such as disciplinary issues, health issues, sense of insecurity, lack
of attendance etc are discussed and counselled with care.
 Mentoring Meeting is conducted every month during which Mentors submit the
register and the mentoring forms to the high level Mentoring /Counselling committee
comprising of HODs and the Head of the institution.
 The committee scrutinizes case by case and suggests corrective measures.
 If necessary, the committee holds discussions with the parents and Medical
Counsellor.
Efficacy of the Mentoring System

The prevailing mentoring system helps us in the following ways:


 Enhances the teaching-learning process making it more student-centric
 Provides impartial advice and encouragement to students
 Assists in problem solving and improves self-confidence of students
 Provides individual and personal care to the students
 Improves students‟ performance in internal assessment test and end semester exam
 Reduces the risk of failures and drop-outs and improves academic performance.
 Promotes improvement in attendance percentage of students
 Helps to Identify students interests and create opportunities of growth in relevant
areas.
 Motivates students to participate in various co-curricular and extracurricular activities
 Promotes decision making abilities that support students‟ goals, abilities and
aspirations and helps students to take better control of their career
 Develops a supportive relationship between students and staff
 Creates a positive work environment
 Facilitates information gathering and dissemination
 Promotes effective utilization of college infrastructure and resources.

Type of Mentoring: All-round Development

The all-round development student mentoring system focuses on the following four
progresses:
i. Academic progress
ii. Co-curricular progress
iii. Extra-curricular progress
iv. Career progress

i. Academic progress:
 All students will be mentored by the respective mentors after every Internal
Assessment Tests and after every end semester examination results. This enables the
mentors to monitor the progress of each student.
 During this regular mentoring, the students are mentored based on their performance.
Students who have scored good marks are encouraged to perform better.
 Good performers are advised to help the slow learners whenever possible, which
enables peer learning among the students.
 Toppers are motivated to score good GPAs in all the semester and secure university
ranks.
 Slow learners are advised to attend coaching classes for better understanding of the
subjects.
 Scholarships and certificates are given to Class Toppers/Meritorious Students
 College Toppers are awarded based on the academic performance.
 Best Outgoing Student Award is also presented to motivate the students.
Efficacy:
Through this effective mentoring system
 The performance of the students in the internal assessment tests has improved and the
students who perform better are motivated to do well in the upcoming tests.
 Slow learners have also shown improvement in their test performance because of peer
learning. They are motivated to perform better in the ensuing tests.
 6 students of first batch and 16 students of second batch have shown improvement
and have secured university ranks.
 Slow learners who attend coaching classes perform better in internal tests and have
shown great improvement.

ii. Co-curricular progress:

 Students‟ participation in co-curricular activities is periodically monitored.


 Suitable events are identified by the mentors and intimated to the students.
 Students are motivated to participate in multiple activities to enhance their technical
and life skills.
 Students are encouraged to do inter-departmental projects.
 Students are involved in various Value Added Courses based on their interest, various
state and national level symposiums, seminars, conferences & competitions, training
programmes, workshops etc.
 Students of our institute participate in various co-curricular activities across India.

Efficacy

 Students have actively participated in several co-curricular events inside and outside
the college.
 Students have participated in a wide range of best events suggested by the faculty.
 Students have improved their technical and life skills
 Many inter-departmental projects, value added courses, symposiums, conferences &
competitions, training programmes, workshops have made them industry-ready.
 Students have travelled to many institutions in Tamilnadu and across the country to
participate in events/competitions and have also won prizes.

iii. Extra-curricular progress

 With the support of Physical Education department, Extracurricular Clubs, NSS, YRC
units of RIT, mentors identify the potential talents among the students and encourage
them to participate in various extra-curricular activities like sports, NSS, photography
and social activities.
 Participation in extra-curricular activities moulds their character and personality.
Students emerge physically and mentally strong. Such participations increase the
confidence of the students too.
Efficacy

 Students have participated in various zonal, district, state and national level events
and have also won prizes.
 Students have started their own NGOs and are involved in several social service
activities. Senior students have addressed and encouraged juniors to be part of their
NGOs and start their own NGOs
 Students have involved in many village welfare activities, cleanliness drives, health &
hygiene programmes in and around Rajapalayam.
 Multiple Tree plantation programmes have been conducted by the NSS unit and the
student NGOs.
 Students have exhibited their skills in photography, acting, elocution, aptitude etc. in
several in-house & external events and have also won prizes.
iv. Career progress
 Mentors through the Career Guidance Cell, Higher Education Cell and
Entrepreneurship Development Cell, guide the students to achieve their career aim by
following the practices like:
o GATE coaching
o UPSC motivational programme
o Foreign and additional languages coaching
o Entrepreneurial skill development programme
o Value Added Courses / Placement training programmes / Skill development
programmes
o Business English Certificate Programme

 Students have cleared GATE Exam.


 Several Students are undergoing UPSC preparation after graduation.

are underway.

9.2 Feedback analysis and reward /corrective measures

 Every semester, one feedback is collected through an online process System.

4. Feedback analysis process
 Feedback is taken through online questionnaire format for each semester.
 All students of each class are given opportunity to express their opinion with regards to
effectiveness in teaching by a teacher, which is detailed in the online feedback format.

 This feedback helps the institute to take corrective measures whenever required. It also
helps the teachers in improving their teaching methodology.
 The feedback system helps to assess the compatibility between the subject teacher and the
class.

 The collected feedback is analysed and a report is generated for each faculty for every
subject.

 In case the feedback is less than 70% for any teacher, he/she is advised by the HOD,
senior staff member of the department and Principal to rectify the shortcomings. Suitable
suggestions are given for the same.

 Regular class committee meetings are conducted in the presence of HOD, Senior faculty
member, class advisors , individual subject handling faculties and a five students
comprising from high level to low level from each class are held to get an update on
syllabus completion, teaching methodology, and conduct of teaching, non-teaching and
administrative staff, facilities and infrastructure. Prompt action is taken in case of any
issues brought to notice by students.

5. Basis of Reward/ Record of Corrective Measures


Rewards:
 Honorarium and Appreciation Certificate are given to faculty members who
secure100% Result.
Corrective Measures:
 The online questionnaire format is designed on 100-point scale. Faculty members who
score less than 70% are advised and guided accordingly by the HOD, senior staff
members and the Principal. After due corrective measures a Re-feedback is taken to
assess the improvement.

 Continuing education programs are conducted for the faculty.


 The faculty members are deputed for FDPs and workshops for wholesome training.

Effectiveness of the Feedback System
 Preliminary feedback allows identifying problem areas early in the semester and
addressing the same soon. It also helps the teachers in improving their teaching
methodology.

 All students of each class get opportunity to express their opinion with regards to
effectiveness in teaching by a teacher. It increases the compatibility between the subject
teacher and the class.

 Individual faculty feedback reports help the institution to identify individual training
areas for faculty and arrange programmes accordingly.

 Regular class committee meetings help in updating the students on syllabus completion,
teaching methodology, and conduct of teaching, non-teaching and administrative staff,
facilities and infrastructure. It also leads to prompt action in case of any issues brought to
notice by students.
 The Students‟ feedback, faculty members‟ self-appraisal report and the review by
faculty appraisal committee, headed by principal and GC members helps in improving
the overall Learning Management System.
9.3 Feedback on facilities
Student Feedback Collection Process:
 Every Semester feedback is collected from students manually for improving the
quality of laboratories, library, medical care, hostels, mess, gymnasium and sports.
 Students Grievances meeting is conducted every month to address their problems
 Suggestion box is also placed to collect feedback from the students
Analysis
 The feedback given by the students is consolidated and analysed. The respective
section in-charges, DGM, Vice-Principal and Principal discuss the findings in the
consolidated report with the management and come out with necessary actions.
Corrective Measures:
Based on feedback from students,
 Tools like Apple i-pad, stop watches, gloves, toggles, magnetic symbols, Induino
Boards, Raspberry Pi boards, PLC/SCADA, Power Quality Analyzer, Arduino,
Arduino Mega, Arduino YUN ARM LPC2148 Development Kit, GSM Modulo, GPS
Module, Bluetooth Module, Voice Module, Robot Chassis Kit, Zigbee module, NI
ELVIS III etc. have been purchased for conducting value added courses and for doing
laboratory experiments and projects.
 Display charts have been increased in laboratories for better comprehension.
 Software like MATLAB, Power World Simulator, ETAP, DIgSILENT, PLC & HMI
Software, 3D Printer & Advanced branch specific software like NX CAD, Edge CAM
etc. have been purchased and installed for practice.
 Damaged hardware components are duly replaced and additional components like
Induino Boards, Raspberry Pi boards, PLC/SCADA, Power Quality Analyzer, myRIO
and myDAC kits, ELVIS kit, IC Tester, Various sensors and I/O devices are
purchased whenever required.
 Damaged equipment is identified and serviced at the earliest.
 Periodical calibration of the lab equipment is done.
 Career and Research laboratories like RIT-AI Research Centre, RIT Automation and
Robotics Club, NI-LabVIEW Research Laboratory, Tessolve Semiconductor
Laboratory and RIT-HARITA Research Centre have been set up to enhance
internship and placement.
 First Aid Box and Fire Extinguisher have been placed in laboratories for student
safety.
Library
Based on the students‟ feedback, the following corrective actions have been taken so far.
 The number of general, novel and competitive books have been increased.
 The seating capacity has also been increased from 95 to 150.
 The number of computers and headphones are going to be increased in the digital
library.
 Student WhatsApp group has been created in which students continuously update
others about conferences, workshop, E-Books details etc.
 The library working time and library hours have been increased for extended use by
students after regular working hours. It is also kept open on non-working days.
 Efforts are underway to update to Web based „KOHA‟ software.

Medical care
 The number of beds for boys and girls has been increased in the sick room.
 Campus vehicle facilities are available 24/7 for medical needs.
 A doctor is available in campus from 4.00 PM to 6.30 PM at our RIT health center.
 In case of additional medical need, provisions have been created for students to avail
medical service at Ramco Hospitals, Rajapalayam.
Sports:
 The Ground size has been increased by 400 meters and more sports equipment has
been purchased
 A separate sports area has been allotted for conducting other field events like shot put,
discus throw, javelin throw, handball and kho-kho.
 A new indoor stadium is under consideration for the next academic year.
Gymnasium
 For the gym, machines, treadmills, equipment for power lifting, weight training and
cycling are purchased as per students‟ requirements
 A dedicated area for aerobics and cardio exercises is also created based on the
suggestions given by weight lifters, body builders and fitness seekers.
Hostel
 The recommendations of Hostel welfare committee are incorporated in ensuring food
quality in boys and girls hostel.
 Separate TV room is made available for I, II, III and IV year students.
 As per students‟ requirement, a separate reading hall has been set up in boy‟s hostel.
Mess
 Menu is decided and changes are made when necessary in discussion with the Mess
Committee consisting of Student representatives and Staff members.
 Faculty members are deputed during lunch hours to boys and girls hostels to check the
quality of food preparation.
 A Resister is placed in the mess hall, in which, the students and faculty can give their
suggestions. Suitable action is taken after reviewing them.
9.4 Self – Learning (5):
 Students are encouraged to pursue online courses.
 Self – Learning assignments are given to the students
 Seminar presentations are given on technical topics
 10 minute presentations are given on self-interested topics by all the students every
morning between 8:50AM to 9:00AM

Internship Training

 Internships are arranged for students of all branches of engineering to help them train
on domain specific skills required for the industry. For this purpose, suitable
industries are identified and MoUs are signed with them to facilitate this process.
Some of the companies include, CADD Technologies, Future Calls Technology,
Harita Techserv, Tessolve Semiconductors, BSNL, TVS Training and Services Ltd.
etc. As part of internship, students undergo both internal and external trainings for
fixed durations. These internships help students gain exposure on upcoming
technologies and make them industry-ready. The areas in which students are involved
in internship: IoT Smart Lift monitoring System in IoT using arduino IDE with
ultrasonic sensors, Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Internet of Things,
Refrigeration System, Automobile Manufacturing, Engineering Design, Industrial
Automation, Electrical Distribution System, Electrical Drives & Control, Renewable
Energy Sources.
9.6 Entrepreneurship Development: (5)
RIT ED-Cell was constituted in 2014 and is functioning with a policy of organizing minimum
two programmes every semester. Since its commissioning, the ED Cell has organized various
programmes with a foresight to inculcate entrepreneurial skills and interest among students of
RIT. RIT ED Cell helps students to identify potential programmes organized by other
institutions / organizations in which they can participate and equip their skill sets. Students
also pursue online course to gain knowledge about entrepreneurship.

Beyond these programmes, the students are motivated to participate in events like Business
plan (B-plan) preparation, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Business quiz, taking
off business, etc. organized by other institutions and organizations. Through consistent
motivation, more than 10 students have become entrepreneurs in the past three years.

RIT ED Cell, in association with Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII)


hub, Tirunelveli, has conducted a three day online course for the students which deals with
skill sets required for Entrepreneurship. Four students of RIT have successfully completed E-
Leader training workshop. Training from such programmes has helped them to organize
various programmes within the campus.

Two students have completed the Train the Trainers programme organized by EDII hub,
Tirunelveli and have been shortlisted for training the school students in developing their
entrepreneurial skills

MHRD Innovation Council (MIC) has approved to establish Institution Innovation Council
(IIC) in the college premises in September 2019. RIT ED Cell and RIT IPR Cell will be
functioning under a single umbrella RIT-IIC. Henceforth, the programme to be organized by
RIT ED Cell will be planned accordingly based on the guidelines given by MIC

9.7 Co-curricular and Extracurricular Activities (10):
Besides curricular activities, students are engaged in co-curricular and extracurricular
activities. This is normally done by student‟s associations and student chapters at various
department levels and the college levels. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities provide
opportunities for students to explore new fields of interest, cultivate leadership skills, and
build teamwork qualities. Participation in technical contests which includes quizzes, paper
presentation contests, and project exhibitions are organized. Most of these activities are
initiated by the students and are engaged in developing a dynamic culture, fostering
collaboration and cooperation on campus.

Co-curricular activities:
Each department has a student association/chapter. Every year the co-curricular
activities will be organized through these associations. By participating in co-curricular
activities students continue to apply the academic knowledge learnt in the classroom to
enhance their individual traits. In addition, every year institute arranges a national level
technical student symposium “TECHYUGA” which comprises many events related to Civil,
Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, and Mechanical
disciplines.
Each department has a student association/chapter. Every year co-curricular activities
are organized through these associations. For the overall development of the students, all
departments have department associations that contain different committees. Under these
committees, various activities are arranged frequently. Students‟ newsletter and magazine are

addition, every year the institute arranges a national level technical student symposium called

IITM PALS
IITM PALS (Pan IIT Alumni Leadership Series) is an initiative by Alumni‟s of IIT to make
the engineering college students „industry ready‟. Ramco Institute of Technology has been a
Partner Institute of IITM PALS since November 2018.

The students and faculty members attend these events to acquire knowledge. The gained

problems, enhance entrepreneurial skills and achieve excellence. Events like Tinkathon help
students think critically and creatively. Such events help students to develop their skills.
Students acquire practical knowledge of concepts through „Theory to Practice Lectures‟.
Students are encouraged to do interdisciplinary projects to promote innovative skills. PALS
helps to identify industry related problems through Campus Analyze events. PALS increases
the leadership qualities by selecting student leaders through their performance and constantly
motivating them to improve their organizational skills. Faculty members gain knowledge
from industrial visits and disseminate the same to the students.

Achievements in 2018-19
 Our students have received Cash award and Certificate of Appreciation for winning
in the online Quiz.
 Two students have received Sparkling Star Certificate for active participation in
PALS events.
 Students have also received Certificate of Appreciation for the project exhibited in
InnoWAH - Project Innovation Competition

National Science Day


National Science Day is celebrated in the institution on 28th of February of every year. On
that day, project exhibition and various competitions like paper presentation, science solitaire,
group discussion, multimedia presentation, Essay writing etc. are conducted for students.
Students of all years of engineering involve in these events and also exhibit their innovative
projects. The best projects are selected by a team of judges and the concerned students are
duly awarded. Winners in various competitions are also encouraged with certificates of
appreciation.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Extracurricular Clubs at RIT
Tamil Mandram is a cultural club that promotes Tamil by conducting Tamil literary events
such as elocution, poetry, drama and creative writing competitions.

Elite English Learners’ Club aims at promoting students‟ English language through events
like Just a Minute (JAM), Debate, Essay writing, Extempore, Group Discussion, Turn Coat,
Poster Making etc. Such events build team spirit, instil confidence, promote on-stage
performances and help acquire language skills easily.

Math Experts Club strives to develop students' level of Math skills and knowledge. It is
done through games, activities, and mock competitions that include Logic completion and
Math Puzzles. The club functions with a motto of creating awareness among students about
the application of Mathematics in Engineering and to inspire the them with the knowledge of
the enormous applications of Mathematics in various fields.

Fine Arts and Cultural Club provides opportunities to develop talents in different forms of
art like music, singing, dance, drama, painting etc.

Science Club aims at arousing and cultivating students‟ interest in learning science by means
of project exhibitions, paper presentations, memory challenge, science solitaire, fix it,
multimedia presentations etc.

Eco Club is functioning to instil green awareness and responsibility in students. Several tree
plantation programmes, blood donation camp, campus cleaning drives and medical camp are
conducted through this club.

YRC and National Service Scheme units of the college help develop students' character and
personality by motivating them to involve in activities such as blood donation camps, village
cleanliness programmes, health and hygiene awareness programmes, waste management
events, tree plantation drives and several other allied activities.

Sports Club strives to inculcate skills like leadership, teamwork, problem-solving,


responsibility, self-discipline and a sense of initiative through various sports and games
events.

Photography Club encourages its members to take photos while learning to love the craft
more. It provides students and staff a platform to explore and appreciate the world around
them through taking photos, making short films and writing screenplays.

Centre for Women Welfare, Safety and Progress strives to promote the general welfare of
the student community while maintaining an intellectual, social, and cultural environment
among women. The purpose of this organization is to establish a strong community of young
women on campus by helping to build character, improve self-awareness, and gain
confidence within one‟s self.
Non-Governmental Organizations: Apart from academics, students of our institution
involve themselves in activities of social concern. As a result, with a view to contribute to
various social causes like environmental issues, public welfare, helping the disadvantaged
and promoting awareness of health and hygiene, 6 NGOs have been started by students of
various branches of Engineering. Their active participation in in-house events and other
external public events have won them name and acclaim. Through these NGOs, students
actively involve in blood donation camps, tree plantation drives, awareness rallies, orphanage
visits and many more activities.
