Part 1 Test Network Connectivity Using Ping

Step 1: Determine whether the remote server is reachable.

NOTE: CMD username is different because I only borrowed this laptop.

Part 2 Trace a Route to a Remote Server Using Tracert

Step 1: Determine what route across the Internet traffic takes to the remote server.

Part 3 Trace a Route to a Remote Server Using Web-Based and SoftwareTools

Step 1: Use a web-based traceroute tool.

Compare the tracert from Part 1 that goes to Africa with the tracert that goes to Africa
from the webinterface. What difference do you notice?

Kenneth P. Quillopo

- Comparing Web interface and command line, It looks like that the traceroute from
the web interface is using different network paths compare to the one that we use in CMD.
Based on what I’ve researched this is because the web interface often use their own
internal routing mechanism which has a different path compare on the path where my
computer path takes.

Some of the traceroutes have the abbreviation asymm in them. Any guesses as to
what this means? What is its significance?

- The asymm in traceroute is abbreviation for asymmetric routing path. And based
on what I’ve researched this means that the path the packet takes to reach the destination
is different from the path it takes to reach the destination is different from the path it takes
to return back to the source.

- The significance of this asymmetric routing is for performance. Asymmetric routing

can sometimes lead to slower response times, specifically in return path is longer or goes
through less efficient networks. It also important for troubleshooting and security. In some
cases, asymmetric routing can be used to improve security by making it harder for the
attacker to trace back the path to the source.

Step 2 Use Visualroute Lite Edition

b. Using Intrace: Visual Traceroute for android. (Because of having error downloading on
laptop)

Record IP addresses in the path

Did all the traceroute use the same paths to www.cisco.com? Why or why not?

- No, the two have the same ip address path and the other one from the web has a
different path. It is because of asymm or asymmetric routing path where the web interface
uses different approaches or use their own routing mechanisms which is not the same as
the direct path of my computer and phones (Android).

Reflection

Having now viewed traceroute through three different tools, are there any insights that
using visualroute provided that the other tools did not?

- Based on my research, Visualroute provides much clearer graphical representation

of the traceroute path. Because of that, it is much easier to understand the route’s topology
compared to others. Visualroute offers more comprehensive and visually appealing
approach on the analysis about traceroute. It is recommended to anyone wants to have a
deeper understanding of how their network connection works.
