Title
Test for color fastness: Color fastness to domestic and commercial laundering.
Scope
The ISO 105-C06:2010 standard outlines methods to evaluate the resistance of textile colors to domestic
and commercial laundering. The primary objectives of this standard are to measure the fading or alteration
in the original color of textiles after washing, referred to as color change, and to assess the transfer of color
to adjacent fabrics during laundering, known as color staining. These methods simulate normal laundering
conditions applicable to household, industrial, or hospital environments. However, it is important to note
that the standard does not account for the effects of optical brighteners commonly found in commercial
detergents. The tests under this standard are categorized into two types.

• Single test (S)

Simulates one cycle of washing.

• Multiple test (M)

Simulates up to five cycles of washing, providing a more severe evaluation of color fastness due to increased
mechanical action.

1.Principle
The test involves washing a textile specimen in contact with specified adjacent fabrics under controlled
conditions of temperature, detergent type, and mechanical action. After laundering, the following aspects
are evaluated.

• Color change
Comparison with a grey scale or through instrumental measurement.

• Staining
Assessment of color transfer to adjacent fabrics using visual or instrumental methods.

2. Referenced standards for ISO 105

2.1 ISO 105-A01
General principles of testing

➢ Overview
This standard provides the general guidelines for conducting all color fastness tests. It includes procedures
for sample preparation, environmental conditions, and evaluation techniques, serving as a foundation for
other ISO 105 tests.

➢ Standard light source

D65 light source (daylight) is recommended for testing, ensuring consistent and accurate visual assessment.

➢ Temperature and humidity control

Specimens should be conditioned at a temperature of 20 ± 2°C and relative humidity of 65 ± 4% to stabilize
before testing.

➢ Importance of uniformity
Ensures repeatability and reliability by standardizing environmental and procedural conditions across
different laboratories and operators.

2.2 ISO 105-A02

Grey scale for assessing change in color

Figure 1. Grey scale for ISO 105-A02

➢ Overview
This standard describes the use of a visual grey scale for evaluating the degree of color change in textiles
after washing. Grades range from 1 (severe change) to 5 (no change).

➢ Testing conditions

Samples are compared under controlled lighting conditions using a D65 light source to ensure accuracy.

➢ Procedure
Visual comparison of the tested sample with standard grey scales to determine the level of fading.

2.3 ISO 105-A03

Grey scale for assessing staining

Figure 2. Grey scale for ISO 105-A03

➢ Overview
Provides a visual grey scale for measuring staining on adjacent fabrics. Staining grades range from 1 (severe
staining) to 5 (no staining).

➢ Testing conditions
Similar to ISO 105-A02, testing is conducted under standard lighting to maintain consistency.

➢ Procedure
The stained adjacent fabric is visually compared to the grey scale to assess the degree of staining.

2.4 ISO 105-A04

Instrumental assessment of staining

➢ Overview
Details the use of instruments such as spectrophotometers for quantitatively evaluating staining on adjacent
fabrics. It ensures precise and objective measurements.

➢ Procedure
• Instruments are calibrated using standard references.
• Measure the reflectance of adjacent fabrics before and after testing.
• Calculate staining values based on changes in reflectance and colorimetric values.
➢ Key parameters
Provides standardized color measurement methods to eliminate human bias and ensure reproducibility.

2.5 ISO 105-A05

Instrumental assessment of change in color

➢ Overview
Provides methods for using instruments to measure color changes accurately. This eliminates subjective
errors associated with visual assessments.

➢ Procedure
Spectrophotometers measure the reflectance of light from the specimen before and after washing to
calculate color differences.

2.6 ISO 105-F01 to F07

Single-fiber adjacent fabrics

➢ Overview
Specifies the preparation and properties of single-fiber adjacent fabrics such as wool, cotton, silk, and
polyester. These are used to assess staining under controlled conditions.

➢ Key requirements
• Uniform fiber composition for consistent results.
• Pre-treatment to remove any impurities or finishes that could affect staining.
• Standardized fabric dimensions and weight to ensure compatibility with test specimens.
2.7 ISO 105-F10
Multifiber adjacent fabric

➢ Overview
Specifies a multifiber fabric made of strips of different fiber types (e.g., cotton, wool, polyester, viscose).
It is used to evaluate staining across various fibers simultaneously.

➢ Preparation
The multifiber fabric is pre-treated to ensure uniformity and consistency during testing.

2.8 ISO 3696

Water for analytical laboratory use

➢ Overview
Defines the purity requirements for water used in laboratory tests. For ISO 105-C06, Grade 3 water is
required to minimize contaminants that could affect results.

➢ Grade 3 water
• Used for general laboratory applications and washing tests.
• Low levels of impurities to avoid interference with test results.
➢ Key parameters
• Conductivity: Maximum of 5 µS/cm.
• Silica Content: Maximum of 0.05 mg/L.
• Organic Matter: Very low levels to prevent contamination.

3. Required materials and equipment

➢ Washing apparatus
• Stainless steel containers with a capacity of 550 ± 50 mL.
• Rotational speed of 40 ± 2 rpm.
• Thermostatically controlled water bath with temperature accuracy of ±2°C.
➢ Steel balls
Non-corrodible (stainless steel balls), 6 mm in diameter, used to create abrasive action during washing.

➢ Test fabrics
• Multifiber Adjacent Fabric (ISO 105-F10)
A fabric composed of strips of wool, polyester, acetate, cotton, viscose, etc.
• Single-Fiber Adjacent Fabrics (ISO 105-F01 to F07)
Specific fabrics for tests requiring compatibility with the tested textile.
➢ Detergents
• AATCC Standard Reference Detergent WOB (Without Optical Brighteners)
Used for standard laundering.
• ECE Detergent with Phosphates
