“The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails much” – (James 5:16b)
Effectual - effective
Fervent - to put forth power work
Prayer – a wanting; a need expressed to God; an asking; supplication is the action of asking for
something earnestly or humbly on behalf of someone else
Righteous – to be in right standing with God
Avails – to be strong, forceful, prevails greatly (dunamai; to be capable, strong, and powerful)
Heavens open when we pray! Prayer is powerful!
“Elijah was a man with a nature just like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and
it did not rain on the land for three and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave
rain, and the earth produced fruit.” – (Jam. 5:16-18).
Intimacy
Intimacy defined: Marriage. “Into me you see.” Oneness is a union with the Godhead (John
17). Jesus prayed that we would be one even as He and the Father are one.
I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those You have given Me, for all are
Yours. And all Mine are yours and I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the
world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them through
your name those who You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are (John
17:9-11 NKJV).
“I am my beloved’s and he is mine.” (Song of So. 2:16)
The Father’s presence is available to everyone all the time. The veil was torn (Matt. 27:51) We
can come into His presence by the blood of Jesus we do not need a priest.
Let us, therefore, come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in the time of need (Heb. 4:16)
• Jesus is inviting us to draw near to him (James 4:8)
• It is simple, but not easy
• Abiding is the key to answered prayer (John 15:7)
Intimacy is the foundation of Intercessory Prayer
• Moses was busy leading millions of people yet he made time to meet with God face-to-face,
and from this posture of an intimate relationship he interceded for his people
• Take the time! – schedule a daily time of connection with Jesus and keep your appointment
with God (not religiously no box-checking)

1
• It takes intention – get into a quiet place and turn everything off (do not worry fidgeting is
part of the process of bringing yourself into stillness)
• To meet with God face-to-face for no other reason than loving Him
• To know Him and His ways – Paul/Moses (Phil 3:10; Ps. 103:7)
• Paul’s primary pursuit in life was to know Christ he was a lover of God.
• Suffering is a part of knowing Jesus
Activation: Ask God to lead you into intimacy and into His presence (Rom. 8:14)
Accepting His Invite
• Requires faith, trust, and yielding of control. It is the act of following Him into His presence
(Jer. 6:16-17)
• God is our Father; He is gracious, slow to anger, abounding in mercy, and full of
lovingkindness (Luke 12:32; Psalm 145:9)
• Those who know their God will do great exploits (Dan. 11:32)
• He is the captain of the army – The Lord of Hosts (Jos.5:13-15 the host is the unseen army
– angels)
• We inquire of Him and follow Him into intercession
• Intercession is spiritual warfare and battle
• Learn to listen and ask questions
• He is the one who fights for us and secures the battle
• Worship: Wrap me in your mercy; yoke me in your meekness with cords of lovingkindness
bind me to you - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4tnNLk99mo
• His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Is.
55:8-9)
• Be sober; be vigilant because the adversary the devil is seeking whom he may devour
• The Holy Spirit teaches us (John 14:26)
• God does nothing without first telling his servants the prophets (Amos 3:7)
As prophets, we hear from God, and as intercessors knowing what God is doing on the earth is
essential. We will be able to stop the plans of the enemy. – Samuel
Listening – What to do once you get there…
• Wait patiently silently for Him (Is. 40:31)
• I will set up watchman who will listen to the sound of the trumpet (Jer. 6:17) spiritual ears
and eyes are open
• Come up here. The Spirit and the bride say, “Come” As you increase in sensitivity and
friendship with the Holy Spirit you will develop the ability to get above the noise of life and
soar in the Spirit realm (Rev. 22:17)

2
Key: Intercessors release what heaven is saying. “Jeramiah what do you see?” God wants to
ask questions to train us.
Silence and listening are powerful heart postures in intercession
• David inquired of the Lord – Do we go up into this battle? Will you grant us victory? (1 Sam.
30:8)
• Paul was on his way to but the Holy Spirit re-directed him (Acts 16:6
Holy Spirit will guide intercession and cause a yielding. Being a friend of the Holy Spirit
receives the nudges and checks and responds at the slightest whisper of his voice. He knows
best and is lining things up
Key: Intercession is an ongoing dialog, a conversation, a series of yielding that requires being
able to keep the secrets of God
PONDER: Bridal intercession: what if we stopped warring and just rested on his chest? Are
you willing? Notice if Jesus handled the items your heart needed? (Is. 30:15)
The Heart of an Intercessor

• Moses knew God’s ways. An example of Moses’ numerous prayers/intercessions on behalf

of his people, Israel. “But now, please forgive their sin but if not then blot me out of the book
you have written.” Ex. 32:32 – This is the heart of the intercessor.
• The fervency of Moses intercession – “I lay prostrate before the Lord 40 days and 40 nights
because the Lord had said he would destroy you.” (Deut. 9:25)
• He pleads with God, “Forgive their sin- and if not blot me out, I pray of the book”
• Moses offered up prayer and supplication with loud cries and tears
God hears the cries of his people. Tears are prayers in liquid form
Remember: God does nothing until he tells his servants the prophets (Amos. 3:7)
To know what to say and do in intercession - Jesus said, “I only say what my Father is saying
and do what the Father is doing” (John 5:18-20). Intercession is the outflow of intimacy with
God. Effective intercession requires RELATIONSHIP.
All Prophets Are Intercessors

• The first prophet and intercessor was Abraham. In Gen. 20:7, In a dream God told
Abimelech king of Gerar, to hand back Sarah, Abraham’s wife, and said that Abraham’s
intercession would save him from certain death, “because he is a prophet.” (Gen. 20:7; 17)
• In Gen. 18:22-23 Abraham prayed for Sodom and Gomorrah and Lot was saved
• Ezekiel wrestles with God and reminds him that His reputation is at stake. The reputation of
Yahweh is one of the strongest arguments of prophets interceding for God’s people (Eze
9:8-11; 11:13-16)
• Moses reminded God of His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to bring them into the
promised land (Josh 7:9)

3
Key: These arguments are just as strong today if we pray to him in light of our New Covenant
understanding of the character and promises of our Heavenly Father and the victory of Jesus,
our Savior.
• The Spirit makes intercession for us with groans (Rom. 8:26)
• Jesus speaks to the Father on our behalf (Rom. 8:34)
• Jesus is our advocate with The Father
Faith – Without faith, it is impossible to please God. Faith and intercession go together
• Pray the prayer of faith – “Whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive if you have faith”
(Matt. 21:22)
• Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17; Heb. 11:6)
Biblical Truth
The Word of God – Our plumbline, example, and place to test what we experience as we
engage in spiritual warfare
• We learn the truth and what is real – we do not study the fake or counterfeit
• Bank tellers do not study fake 100-dollar bills; they study the real so when they see the
counterfeit, they know right away)
• Jesus is the Word and we can wield our sword in the spirit realm with the Word of God. The
Bible is The Truth. Jesus is the Truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.
• The Bible helps us discern if what we see, feel, or sense activity around us is truth. Begin to
ask Holy Spirit to speak about intercession in the scriptures
• The sword of the Spirit – the only offensive weapon in the armor (Eph. 6).
• The armor is all JESUS as we are IN UNION with him, we are protected
• The Bible helps us to test our experiences and words out (1 Tim. 3:16)
• For protection – It is written! (Matt. 4:4) – “Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word
that proceeds out of the mouth of God”
• God exalts His word above His name – Psalm 138:2 – He stands behind His word, and
when we intercede and pray the promises of God, we can be sure He will answer it.
• Jesus’ weapon in the wilderness – The name of Jesus and his word both written, and
prophetic are powerful and effective. Jesus is the name we have the authority to ask in
Activation: Spend time reading and meditating on the scriptures. It is important to have a
balance of living in the supernatural and the written word. We will discuss prophetic
intercession and praying words of revelation in module 4.
Key: The intercessors best weapons are the name of Jesus, the blood of Jesus, and the Word
of God.
