STAT 251: PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS

TUTORIAL SHEETS

WEEK 3

Discrete Probability Distribution

Bernoulli
1) Given a six-sided fair die is tossed,
(
1 if a 5 occurs
Y =
0 otherwise

(a) Find the distribution of Y .

(b) Find:

i) E(Y )
ii) V (Y )

Binomial Distribution

2) A large retailer purchases a certain kind of product from a manufacturer. The

manufacturer indicates that the defective rate of the product is 3% in a shipment.
The inspector of the retailer randomly picks 20 items of the product from a
shipment.
i) What is the probability that there will be (3) defective items?
ii) What is the probability that there will not be more than two (2) defective
3) A life insurance company has found there is a 3% probability that a randomly
selected application contains an error. Assume applications are mutually inde-
pendent in this respect. An auditor randomly selects 100 applications. Calculate
the probability that 95% or less of the selected applications are error-free.
Poisson Distribution

4) In a certain country, the average number of deaths from a certain disease is 10 per
year. If the number of deaths from this disease has the Poisson distribution,

a) At least 2 deaths in 3 months

b) At most one death in 2 months

5) Let X represent the number of customers arriving during the morning hours and let
Y represent the number of customers arriving during the afternoon hours at a dinner.
You are given:

i) X and Y are Poisson distributed

ii) The first moment of X is less than the first moment of Y by 8
iii) The second moment of X is 60 percent of the second moment of Y

Calculate the variance of Y.

Geometric Distribution

6) Let N be the number of visits that a randomly chosen insured makes to the doctor in
a year. If N has a geometric distribution with mean 3, what is the probability that a
randomly chosen insured makes at least 2 visits in a year?

7) A geological study indicates that an exploratory oil well drilled in a certain part of a
state strikes oil with probability of 0.20.

i) Find the probability that the first strike of oil comes on the third well drilled.
ii) Find the probability that the third strike of oil comes on the sixth well drilled.
iii) Find the mean and variance of the member of wells that must be drilled if the
company wants to set up three producing wells

Negative Binomial

8) In the sequence of independent Bernoulli trials with a probability of success 0.3,

a) Exactly 10 repetitions are necessary to obtain the third success

b) At most 3 repetitions are required to obtain the second success

9) A company takes out an insurance policy to cover accidents at its manufacturing plant.
The probability that one or more accidents will occur during any given month is 3/5.
The number of accidents in any given month is independent of the number of accidents
in all other months.
Calculate the probability that June will be the fourth month in 2011 in which at least
one accident occurs.
